I knew I loved you then, but you'd never know, 'cause I troped it cool when I was scared of letting go:

  • Breakfast in Bed: In “Say You Won’t Let Go”
"I’ll wake you up with some breakfast in bed.
I’ll bring you coffee with a kiss on your head."
  • Cover Version: One of his notable songs is a cover of "Impossible" by Shontelle, which he won The X Factor with.
  • Face on the Cover: Both his Self-Titled Album and Back From the Edge have pictures of him on the cover.
  • Grow Old with Me: The singer in "Say You Won't Let Go" sings to his lover that he wants to stay with them until they're grey and old.
  • Intercourse with You: Is what “Naked” focuses on.
  • One-Woman Song: "Emily", which is him singing about a hypothetical daughter should he become a father.
  • One-Woman Wail: James does One-Man Wails often when he sings in his music.
  • Meaningful Name: Back From The Edge is named since it was about recovering from mental struggle following his success on The X-Factor.
  • Silly Love Songs: Some of his songs are these, notably "Say You Won't Let Go"
I knew I loved you then
    But you'd never know
'Cause I played it cool when I was scared of letting go
    I know I needed you
    But I never showed
But I wanna stay with you until we're grey and old
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: In “Say You Won’t Let Go”
"I held your hair back when you were throwing up."
