Fool's Gold: Sands is a podcast created by Dingo Doodles, her husband Felix, and their friend Avery. It takes place in the same setting as Fools Gold: Into the Bellowing Wilds using the D&D 3.5 game system. There is a playlist👁 Image
for the series on Dingo's Youtube channel.
The podcast follows Rooster (Dingo), a half-genie fighter from the town of Teeck in the Nobani Desert, and Kore (Avery), a demon cleric of Abrith. Rooster, having lived in Teeck for about a decade, passes time sand-sailing the desert. Notably, Rooster sports a set of sharpened, gold teeth. Meanwhile, Kore is traversing the Nobani desert on a mysterious quest for Lord Abrith. The campaign starts at level 2.
Extra material, including comics about Rooster's life before the time the podcast is set can be found on their website👁 Image
Tropes:
- Big Guy, Little Guy: Kore is large and imposing, while Rooster is more rambunctious and doesn't even reach Kore's shoulders in height.
- Blue-and-Orange Morality: Rooster doesn't have the most conventional thought processes, especially when he is granting a wish. This may apply to other genies as well.
- Brain Food: Nelthor eats brains in order to gain the memories of the deceased person. He also appears to need them for sustenance and enjoys the taste.
- Chummy Mummy: Nelthor is this trope, being a literal friendly mummy.
- Dark and Troubled Past: It is implied that things weren't great for Rooster where he used to live.
- Death Is Cheap: Rooster is convinced that everyone who dies will come back after some time, and will not hear otherwise. Possibly, it's Rooster himself who wills them back to life, and this experience is shaping his worldview.
- Dual Wielding: Rooster uses two scimitars.
- An Ice Person: Kore. Though he can use all kinds of clerical spells, he has shown a fondness for ice spells in particular. His body is also cold to the touch, and he can produce small balls of snow at will.
- Literal Genie: The reason Rooster is so against wishes being granted is because of this, the wish may not end up being granted in the way you want.
- Our Werebeasts Are Different: Amelia is a half-elf that is also a were-hyena, whose beast form can stand on two legs.
- Pirate Parrot: Episode 8, "More Pirates, More Problems", has the antagonistic pirate centaur Moor and his pet Fillet, who fills this role despite being a small desert monster.
- Plant Person: Joyce, one of the people from Rooster's recent past, is a cactus person that looks like a prickly humanoid woman. Also, Needlebro, a literal sentient potted cactus.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: Rooster is a pink chaos gremlin of a fighter, while Kore is a dutiful and stoic blue cleric.
- The Kingslayer: Kore is tasked with killing the king of Kikoma, King Hawlin by his god Abrith. While Rooster helps to take the king down to his final slivers of health, Kore deals the final blow and rips out his heart.
- Time Dissonance: Rooster, possibly being immortal, doesn't have the best grasp of time, thinking he had only been in a location for a few months when he had been there for nearly a decade.
- Unskilled, but Strong: There is mounting evidence that Rooster is far stronger than he should be, even for a genie, but has no way to a properly access that power.
