Video Game / Spawn: In the Demon's Hand

Go To

Spawn: In the Demon's Hand is an arcade and Dreamcast video game based on Spawn and made by Capcom. It was first released on arcade cabinets at Japan in 1999 before getting released on the Dreamcast a year later. It was supposed to be a launch title for the PlayStation 2 but it didn't get released.

Tropes shown in this game:

  • Adjustable Censorship: You can set the amount of violence in the game by four levels, from Level 0 to Level 3. Setting the Violence level to 0 disables all gore effects, colors all blood green, and reduces the amount of blood spilled.
  • Artificial Stupidity: If the Admonisher is faced in the Blast Furnace stage during Boss Attack mode, there's a high chance that he'll jump into the lava shortly after he appears, killing himself and giving the player a free win. Same with the Vacillator in the Ice Field stage, who will occasionally jump off the stage entirely if the player is close to the edge.
  • Battle Royale Game: One of the modes of the game is a Battle Royale where the player must defeat all enemies.
  • Bloodier and Gorier: The game is more graphic than previous Spawn games.
  • Captain Ersatz: It's pretty clear that the boss character The Mafia is meant to be comic character Tony Twist, but changed due to the legal issues surrounding the character.
  • The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard: Black Brimstone and Gate Keeper cannot be killed by being knocked into lava when faced as bosses in Arcade Mode or Tournament Mode, to prevent them from being Zero-Effort Boss. They will simply respawn with no additional damage taken.
  • Co-Op Multiplayer: Up to four players can be part of a team.
  • Dual Wielding: Certain characters can dual-wield their weapons provided they find two of the same weapon and equip both simultaneously.
  • Dub Name Change: Medieval Spawn is renamed to Dark Ages Spawn. Possibly because of the legal battle going on with him while the game was in development.
  • Guns Akimbo: Jessica and Spawn IV start off dual-wielding their firearms. Almost any character that can wield firearms can pull this off as well.
  • Palette Swap: The only Spawn game to feature these.
  • Secret Character: In the Dreamcast version, there are 26 unlockable characters.
  • Turns Red: Sam literally does this whenever he's at low health. He moves much faster and hits MUCH harder than normal (he can kill any normal character in two hits from full health when fighting barehanded).
  • Upgrade Artifact: One of the two teams can get one to upgrade their weapons.
