Masyanya (Russian: Масяня) is a Russian adult animated web series and sitcom (later released on TV) created by Oleg Kuvaev with Macromedia Flash in 2001. The series features 9 seasons and 181 episodes as of now.

It features the perpetually optimistic, sarcastic St. Petersburg girl Masyanya and her friends (Hrundel, Lokhmaty) satirizing contemporary Russian life, culture, and politics through absurd, short, dialogue-driven episodes, often focusing on their lazy, cynical, yet relatable daily struggles and observations. Episodes are usually self-contained, focusing on the characters' absurd adventures or commentary on current events, though later episodes introduced family life (kids) and deeper political themes, leading to its ban in Russia.

The series has since received critical acclaim and noteriety for its witty, satirical commentary and its pioneering role in Russian internet culture, gaining widespread fame online among Russian speakers, even moving to TV and gaining international attention (Germany, US language programs) before facing censorship in Russia for episodes critical of the war in Ukraine, leading to a ban and creator emigration, highlighting its political impact.

This page provides examples of:

  • Black Comedy: The series uses dark, sarcastic and often absurd commentary to reflect on contemporary Russian life, focusing on the simple, yet chaotic, existence of its main character, Masyanya. Early episodes often dealt with the mundane struggles of young people in St. Petersburg, often featuring cynical humor, drunken antics, and absurd scenarios.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Masanya frequently delivers cynical, dry commentary on her mundane and absurd situations.
  • The Everyman: In post-Soviet context. The characters represent the average, struggling youth navigating a fast-changing society.
  • Fourth-Wall Mail Slot: Given its internet origin, the characters often address the audience directly or parody contemporary trends
  • The Slacker: Masanya is often portrayed as avoiding traditional work or responsibilities.
  • Slice of Life: Episodes typically focus on daily life, but with exaggerated, surreal, or catastrophic events.
  • Surreal Humor: The series is best known for its sarcastic, cynical, and frequently surreal commentary on everyday life and contemporary Russian culture. Episodes feature bizarre scenarios, such as characters dealing with strange, illogical situations (e.g., a bag of green cats or nonsensical, awful gifts). While the humor is absurd, it is rooted in a cynical, sarcastic, and yet ultimately optimistic view of the "difficulties of simple existence". The show blends realistic, relatable everyday struggles with dream-like or nonsensical absurdity.
