Due to the short's length, all spoilers will be unmarked. You Have Been Warned.

Éiru is a 2025 Irish animated short film co-produced by Cartoon Saloon and Herstory, written and directed by Giovanna Ferrari and produced by Nora Twomey (The Secret of Kells, The Breadwinner, My Father's Dragon)

The short film stars the titular Éiru (Coco Teehan Roche), an ambitious redheaded child who wants to prove herself to the Flame Clan that she is a mighty warrior. Luckily for her, she gets her chance to prove herself when the well conspicuously runs out of water late at night, with the chieftain deciding to send her down the well to figure out the source of the water's absence, leading to an adventure in the belly of the Earth that sees Èiru learning some harsh truths about the very clan she admires...

It premiered on April 5, 2025 during the Cleveland International Film Festival. The short made its non-festival premiere on October 31, 2025 by GKIDS, where it was paired up with Little Amélie or the Character of Rain.

The short contains examples of:

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Éiru is shown being picked on by the other members of the Flame Clan at the beginning due to her small and weak stature compared to them.
  • All There in the Manual: The names of the other two clans' children who meet up with Èiru are not given in the film proper. The credits and the film's website reveal the Tree Clan boy to be Rowan and the Stone Clan girl to be Rocky.
  • Ambiguous Ending: The short ends with the wells being restored and the three children ending up in different clans (Rowan with the Flame Clan, Rocky with the Tree Clan, and Èiru with the Stone Clan) to presumably end the hostility between the three clans, but it's unclear if they return to their original clans and/or if they succeed in bringing upon peace, with the short keeping it open-ended.
  • Broken Pedestal: Being a wide-eyed child who never went out to battle, Éiru saw the Flame Clan as mighty, heroic, and proud warriors fighting against their enemies. Her admiration of her clan gets shattered after she learns that they are bloodthirsty and violent warmongers who have slaughtered countless individuals, including innocents, in the name of victory.
  • Creator Thumbprint: Just like Cartoon Saloon's Irish Folklore Trilogy and their Star Wars: Visions short, "Screecher's Reach", this short is heavily influenced by Celtic Mythology, with the goddess Èriu being a prominent character in the short.
  • Character Development: Éiru starts off as a wide-eyed and fiery child who dreams of going out to battle with her clan, whom she saw as mighty warriors. Upon going down the well and entering the belly of the Earth, however, she learns from the goddess Èriu that her clan are bloodthirsty warmongers who have slaughtered countless lives, which shatters her views of them. By the end, she decides to share the water with the children of the Tree and Stone clans, leading to her getting sent to the Stone Clan by the goddess, paving the way for a more unified and peaceful future for their clans.
  • Divine Punishment: It's revealed that the reason why the Flame Clan and the other two clans run out of water in their wells is because the goddess Èriu has sought to punish them for the violence they have committed to each other and countless others. The goddess reverses this after she sees Èiru, Rowan, and Rocky sharing the little water left in peace.
  • Fiery Red Head: Èiru has long flowing red hair and a fiery and temperamental personality to match, with her wishing to be a mighty warrior. She becomes far less fiery after her realization that War Is Hell and her subsequent Character Development.
  • One-Word Title: The short is simply titled, Èiru.
  • War Is Glorious: Èiru starts off having this mentality, viewing her clan as mighty and brave warriors. However, her mindset on this gets shattered after she learns from the goddess Èriu the ruthless and violent nature of her clan's battles and the effects it has on others.
  • War Is Hell: This forms part of the film's central message. After starting the short thinking War Is Glorious, Èiru gets slapped with this by the goddess Èriu, who directly shows her the Flame Clan and the other clans slaughtering countless people in their constant wars, including innocents caught in the crossfire. This revelation causes her to become more pacifistic instead, opting to share the water with the other clans' children instead of taking it for herself and her clan.
  • Would Hurt a Child: It's heavily implied that the three clans have no qualms killing children in their violent wars, further emphasizing the short's message that War Is Hell.
