A Selective Repeat ARQ system

Abstract

Selective Repeat ARQ (Automatic Repeat Request) provides data transmission error control for circuits where the product of round trip propagation delay x data rate is a significant fraction of the block length. It can be applied to satellite circuits at voice band data rates or terrestrial long lines at group band data rates. This paper examines the design and performance of a particular duplex Selective Repeat ARQ device. The system consists of data terminal equipment, interface adapter, basic error control system and modem with all four elements operating in both transmit and receive modes. An expression is derived for the general transmission efficiency of the system and results of laboratory tests are presented.
