China & Taiwan
The United States has identified the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as the greatest challenge to the security of the United States. China’s modernizing and substantial armed forces are the “pacing threat” for the United States military.
The China & Taiwan Team partners with AEI’s Coalition Defense of Taiwan to produce the China & Taiwan update, which provides a running intelligence estimate of the Chinese Communist Party’s paths to controlling Taiwan and insight into relevant cross-Taiwan Strait developments. ISW and AEI also jointly publish a strategic planning exercise on the requirements for a Coalition Defense of Taiwan. Learn more about these product lines here.

OVERVIEW
The Chinese Communist Party is intensifying its military and political pressure on Taiwan, challenging regional stability and threatening US interests and treaty allies in the Indo-Pacific. Beijing’s coercive strategies demand effective countermeasures to deter aggression against Taiwan and prepare for potential conflict that will threaten the United States and its Indo-Pacific treaty allies, including Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Philippines, and Australia.
ISW’s China Team assesses Beijing’s coercive strategies toward Taiwan and other significant developments in the Pacific, including PRC military exercises and maritime activity in the East and South China Seas. ISW’s China Team is part of the Coalition Defense of Taiwan Project, a partnership with the American Enterprise Institute. The project assesses China’s military and political campaigns against Taiwan, explores strategies for the United States and its allies to deter Beijing’s aggression, and examines options for countering and defeating the Chinese military if necessary. ISW formally launched this portfolio in 2022.
