Fair Use and Attribution Policy

ISW Products

The Institute for the Study of War (“ISW”) creates and publishes original analytical products, including maps, shapefiles, developer notes, reports, and other associated materials (together, the “ISW Materials”). These materials are protected by copyright and other intellectual property rights held by ISW.

1. Permitted Use: ISW is a non-partisan, non-profit, public policy research organization. ISW encourages responsible use of its publicly available materials for educational, research, humanitarian, and journalistic purposes, subject to the attribution and use conditions set out below.

Unless otherwise agreed in writing, use of ISW Materials is limited to:

  • viewing and sharing materials in their published form for non-commercial, informational or media purposes; and
  • quoting or excerpting text with appropriate attribution.

 
Any modification, commercial exploitation, redistribution, or incorporation of ISW Materials into other datasets, mapping platforms, analytic products or systems requires prior written permission from ISW.  

2. Required Attribution: Users must credit ISW whenever any ISW Materials are reproduced, displayed, or shared, as follows:

  • Print/Web: “Source: Institute for the Study of War”.
  • Broadcast/Video: “Institute for the Study of War” (displayed as on-screen text for the full duration of such display).
  • Social Media: Tag @theStudyofWar on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). Tag “Institute for the Study of War” on Facebook.

Attribution must appear prominently, clearly and directly with the ISW Materials. Where practicable, we kindly request that any online republication of ISW Materials include a link back to ISW’s website (www.understandingwar.org).

3. Restrictions: Users may not:

  • alter or remove ISW’s logos, credit lines, or disclaimers;
  • use ISW Materials to imply ISW endorsement of any product, service, or political position;
  • use ISW Materials for any purpose that relies on, or purports to rely on, ISW Materials for transactional activities (including, but not limited to, markets and speculative markets);
  • copy or reproduce shapefiles, developer notes, or datasets for any purpose without ISW’s written consent; or
  • redistribute ISW Materials to third parties in bulk, via API, or through automated means.

4. Copyright and Ownership: The ISW Materials are collected from open sources, including but not limited to geolocated visual evidence, opposition, local, and international media sources. All rights, title, and interest in ISW Materials remain the exclusive property of ISW.

ISW & AEI: Coalition Defense of Taiwan

The Institute for the Study of War (“ISW”) and American Enterprise Institute’s (“AEI”) Coalition Defense of Taiwan (“CDOT”) create and publish original analytical products, including maps, shapefiles, developer notes, reports, and other associated materials including the China & Taiwan update, which provides a running intelligence estimate of the Chinese Communist Party’s paths to controlling Taiwan and insight into relevant cross-Taiwan Strait developments. ISW and AEI also jointly publish a strategic planning exercise on the requirements for a Coalition Defense of Taiwan (together, the “ISW-CDOT Materials”). These materials are protected by copyright and other intellectual property rights held by ISW and AEI.

The Institute for the Study of War (“ISW”) and American Enterprise Institute (“AEI”) Critical Threats Project (“CTP”) create and publish original analytical products, including maps, shapefiles, developer notes, reports, and other associated materials, including daily updates providing independent open-source analysis of conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East, and China in the Indo-Pacific (together, the “ISW-CTP Materials”). These materials are protected by copyright and other intellectual property rights held by ISW and CTP.

1. Permitted Use: ISW is a non-partisan, non-profit, public policy research organization. ISW encourages responsible use of its publicly available materials for educational, research, humanitarian, and journalistic purposes, subject to the attribution and use conditions set out below.
