Madeline Shaffer is ISWβs Director of Development, where she manages all aspects of the Instituteβs annual giving program, including the development of fundraising strategies; stewardship of donor relations; management of donor communications; assurance of data integrity; and representation as an ambassador for ISW. Previously, Madeline served as the Associate Director of Development for Global & Experiential Learning at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB). She managed fundraising for the Education Abroad Program, Capital Internship Programs, and Pre-College Programs, outlining and implementing annual & major gift strategies to leverage a strong alumni community. Prior to her role as Associate Director, Madeline served as the Development Analyst for the UCSB Library, where she engaged multi-interest donors through a series of events, communications, and stewardship opportunities.
Madeline has years of experience in donor relations and cultivation, strategic communications and engagement, grant management, and database integrity. She has successfully connected donors to their areas of passion and cultivated communities of shared philanthropic interests.
Madeline received her M.Sc. in Earth Science from UCSB and her B.A. in Archaeology from The George Washington University. She has published research in the American Geophysical Unionβs scientific journal, Tectonics. Madeline actively volunteers with the Association for Women Geoscientists (AWG) as a member of the Geoscience IDEA Scholarship Committee and has been the recipient of the 2020 AWG Special Recognition Award for her committee service. She also currently serves as the President of the DC, Maryland, & Virginia Chapter of the AWG.
