Samuel Frykholm is a Russia Researcher on ISW’s Russia and Ukraine team. Prior to joining ISW, Sam worked for a humanitarian aid organization and interned with the U.S. Department of State’s Delegation to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, where he contributed to its multilateral diplomacy and arms control efforts.

Sam speaks Russian, Ukrainian, and Turkish. He received the Alexey Malyshev Russian and Eurasian Studies Award from Colorado College in 2024. Sam holds a B.A. in Political Science with a minor in Russian Studies from Colorado College and an M.S. in Foreign Service with a concentration in Global Politics and Security from Georgetown University.
