Is It True? by Kaylee Arafinwiel [Apr. 4th, 2017|10:45 am]

Title: Is It True?
Author: Kaylee Arafinwiel
Summary: The Son of the Hall keeps a firm watch over the Hall’s most recent guests from the South, on the banks of the Brandywine – and has a somewhat sobering conversation with his king.
Rating: PG for mentions of death.
A/N: For Shirebound, for wee hobbits everywhere, and for Dreamflower 😊 For the Purple Path “Things that go bump in the night”, too – at least, very loosely.

“Uncle Éomer?”

The King of the Mark had been dozing lightly in the shade, keeping out of heat of the day, while his son Elfwine fished in the Brandywine. It was a surprise, then, to be drawn out of his rest by fourteen-year-old Periadoc Brandybuck, Son of the Hall. The teenaged lad greeted him with a stern look – and a dish of perch with mushrooms!

“Oh – thank you, lad.” Éomer replied warily, taking the dish. “Have I missed luncheon, then?” The amount of light filtering through the leaves had changed considerably; the Sun was setting and the Moon coming into view – how long had he been sleeping?

“It’s dinner time,” Periadoc said sternly, fixing his father’s liege with a withering glare. “Da says you Big Folk don’t need as many meals as us, but Mum won’t believe it. And you may be king and all, begging your pardon, but you’re still younger than Da and he’ll have plenty to say if you don’t eat.” He paused and tacked on a hasty “My lord,” though his glower was still rather impressive.

Éomer stifled a laugh. Meriadoc the Magnificent was a fearsome foe indeed, here on his own land, and his heir was shaping up to be the same.“Your Da is quite right, Perry-lad, and I do apologise. I was quite tired after our ride. Where Elfwine finds the energy to fish I can’t imagine!” He began tucking into the food at Perry’s insistence, while the lad watched intently to be sure the King finished it all.

“Well, Da was going to wake you, but Mum said to let you be. Though I heard her ask what your own da and mum would think of you skipping meals,” he added. “Da didn’t answer her. Didn’t he meet them? Wasn’t your Da the king?”

Indeed, Éomer himself had taken on a rather closed expression. “No,” he said briefly. “My sister and I were brought up by our uncle, Théoden King, after our parents died.”

Periadoc gasped. “Oh! Like Uncle Frodo,” he said softly. “That’s so sad.” His anger vanished, and he patted Éomer’s arm. “And then your uncle, too, and you and Lady Éowyn just tweens, Da says. Even younger than Uncle Pippin – is that true? It doesn’t seem right.”

Éomer nodded. “Yes, younger than Pippin, though we were both accounted full-grown by the measure of our folk. Still, I will not deny it has been difficult.” He smiled sadly, staring out across the River toward the Shire. “Still, Perry, think no more of it. I have my Lothiriel, and our children. I will always miss my parents – all three of them,” he added, and Perry understood, “but I will not let their deaths burden me – especially not here in the land of the holbytla, with my small brother and his kin here to look after me.”

Perry nodded firmly. “Yes, my lord! We’ll take very good care of you. And here’s some of Ma’s own wild berry crumble, you don’t want to miss that!”

No, Éomer certainly did not! Thoughts of the past aside, he turned his thoughts to Mistress Estella’s delicious cooking.

Title: About Balbo Baggins...and Others
Rating: PG for mention of a parent's death
Author's Notes:

B2MeM Challenge: Family Trees: any character, gen
dreamflower02
Choose a character from one of the Hobbit family trees, one who has no other information, and create a character profile of him or her, based only on the name, the family and the date of birth.

Disclaimer: All the Baggins connections are straight from Tolkien. Angelica's Tookish descent on her mother's side is non-canon (we don't know who her mother was and Isembold's descendants, while acknowledged on the Tree as "many descendants", are otherwise unknown). Isembold's nickname is a callback to my story "The Old Took's Faunts" and is non-canon, but his relationship to Bilbo is canon.

Summary:

So, who was the progenitor of the Baggins Family, anyhow…? Five years before the Long-Expected Party, a certain hobbit lass is dedicated to finding out. She does tend to get off topic, though...

(At the age of 15, a hobbit would appear to be the same as a human child of 9)

Title: A Proper Tale for a Baggins
Rating: G
Author's Notes: Originally written for the B2MeM Challenge: "What about a story about Bilbo's childhood or youth, featuring his parents?" – Dreamflower

This story is dedicated to Dreamflower, whose prompt inspired it, and from whom I took the idea for Bilbo's bedtime story. My Hobbit characterization owes a lot to Dreamflower generally, and no doubt other nods to her fics will be evident! At the age of 11, Bilbo is the equivalent of 7 in human years. Shout outs are made to Dreamflower's stories, especially "The Family Way", as well as my "The Old Took's Faunts" (indirectly, since Belladonna's love of Gandalf's Elven tales began there)

Summary: This is not part of "The Old Took's Faunts", but takes place many years later, in SR 1301 (TA 2901). Bilbo asks for a different bedtime story one night...

Author's Notes: This is the last of "The Old Took's Faunts", and I'm sure Gerontius and Adamanta are very grateful for THAT! lol! :)
Summary: Isengar, youngest child of Thain Gerontius and Lady Adamanta, enters faunthood, and earns a new nickname.

Title: A New Outlook
Rating:    G
Author's Notes: 14 Afterlithe (July) is my friend Michelle's birthday.
Summary: Mirabella has hardly more patience with her special brother than Donnamira before her. But circumstances in the Great Smials have changed somewhat, and perhaps Bard will finally show some sense...

Title: Of Sticks and Stones
Rating:    G
Author's Notes: 25 Foreyule, or December, would of course be Christmas Day in our  calendar. Yule in the Shire is a few days later.
Summary: The new faunt, Donnamira Took, has had quite enough of Bard's favoured status, thank you very much indeed. Aunt Opal, her father's sister, doesn't hold with squabbling, or, of course, with wasting food.

Title: In The Garden
Rating: G
Author's Notes: Isengrim is a tween now, but this is still Belladonna's story. :) (Sorry, I can't force Isen not to grow up! LOL! But most of the brood are still wee hobbits!)
Summary: The first of Gerontius Took's "remarkable" daughters becomes a faunt, and spends this special birthday playing with her brothers in Hildigard's memorial garden.

Title: The Tree and Flower
Rating: PG for mention of trouble Outside the Shire
Author's Notes: This story prompted one from Dreamflower http://www.lotrgfic.com/viewstory.php?sid=2914
Summary: Hildibrand becomes a faunt, though this chapter is less faunt-focused because Gandalf walked in and stole the story from under the Authoress' nose...

Title: Seventh Son
Rating: G
Author's Notes: I extrapolated on the Tooks being said to have "faerie blood" by adding the "seventh son" superstition onto it. And since Bard is the seventh son, well...
Summary: Isembard makes his appearance - the first faunt to present Thain Gerontius, not Papa, with his First Gifts. All does not go well.
