From the Author

Sharing knowledge and creating learning material is a hobby for me. In addition tobeing a software developer, I'm also a teacher. As a Java trainer since 2009, I've taughtJava to thousands of developers with various levels of experience, from university studentsto experienced developers in large corporations. In the past few years, I'vecome to consider Spring a must-learn for beginners. Apps today are no longer implementedwith vanilla languagesβ€”almost everything relies on frameworks. Since Springis the most popular application framework in the Java world today, Spring is somethinga developer needs to learn in their first software development steps. In teaching Spring to beginners, I've realized that it is still treated as somethingyou learn only when you already have some experience coding. When I started writingSpring Start Here, there were already plenty of tutorials, books, and articles on thetopic, but my students continued to tell me they found those materials hard to understand.I realized the problem was not that the existing learning material wasn't excellent, but that there was no dedicated study guide for an absolute beginner, so Idecided to write a book that doesn't consider Spring something you learn after youhave some experience, but instead something you can learn with minimal foundationalknowledge.Technology changes quickly. But it's not only the technology changing. We alsoneed to consider how we can improve the way we teach these technologies. Some yearsago, one would start learning the language fundamentals and get employed as adeveloper without even knowing what a framework is. But today, these things aredifferent. Learning all the details of a language up-front is no longer the way to quicklydevelop the skills you need to work in a software development team. Now, I recommenddevelopers start with the fundamentals and, once they feel comfortable with the basics, start learning an application framework. Spring is, in my opinion, the best applicationframework to start learning. Understanding the Spring basics also opens doors tolearning other technologies and changes the old, linear learning approach intosomething that looks more like a treeβ€”and each branch of the tree is a new frameworkyou learn in parallel with others.I designed Spring Start Here to be the book you want to start learning the Springframework with. This book leads you step-by-step, providing you with all the essentialtheoretical knowledge, accompanied by examples that practically apply the discussedtopics. I hope this book will bring significant value to you, the reader, and help youquickly boost your Spring knowledge and open doors for further learning.

From the Back Cover

Spring Start Here teaches you how to build professional-quality applications using Spring and Spring Boot. You'll start with the core components of the framework and then learn how features like Spring Boot simplify the tedious repetitive tasks you face in every project. When you're done, you'll be able to create Spring apps, secure it with authentication and authorization, and move on to the next exciting steps of your Spring journey.

I'm a dedicated development lead and trainer at Endava, where I lead the development of a project with worldwide installations.

I work as a software developer and trainer since 2007. It is my belief that in software development it’s essential to not only deliver high-quality software but also share knowledge and help others to up-skill. These believes have driven me to design and teach courses related to Java technologies and deliver presentations and workshops.

As a Java instructor, I delivered thousands of hours of trainings to 3000+ students in the past 10 years, recently being involved in courses at the Mathematics and Informatics Faculty of Bucharest University.

During the previous couple of years, I delivered presentations, tutorials and workshops at different important events around the world: in Bucharest, New York, San Francisco, Warsaw, Belgrad, Berlin, and many more.

To keep in touch with the community I also started a YouTube channel dedicated to Java and adjacent technologies where he presents topics for beginner to advanced developers.

Recently, I released together with Manning Publications the book β€œSpring Security In Action”, and I am currently working on my second book, "Spring Quickly".

Outside of work, I am passionate about traveling, music, and scuba diving.

    Should be Required Reading

Hands down this is IMO the best entry-level book on Spring and Spring Boot. I’m a senior level software engineer who uses Spring daily and wish I had this book when I first started out. I think this book should be required reading for any new engineers onboarding to a team that uses Spring and Spring Boot in their eco system. For example a lot of new Spring engineers don’t fully grasp dependency injection or understand the multiple ways you can register beans to the Spring context, or why and when you should use one over the other. Likewise, (and perhaps surprisingly) many new engineers don’t fully understand the correct usage of HTTP methods in REST and how to correctly build service endpoints. This book explains that and so much more, completely demystifying the entire Spring approach while also teaching RESTful best practices.

The author is masterful in his writing and delivery. He is clear and concise in his instruction. His examples are relevant and on point. He does not ramble on or get side tracked in theory or minutia. He just delivers the right amount of info in a most clear and engaging way.

I’ve read a lot of books and watched a lot of videos on the subject, and this is absolutely the best educational tool on Spring/Spring Boot I have come across. Kudos to the author. Thank you!

    Fantastic Intro to Spring

I read this after completing a vocational course in core Java. Immediately after finishing the book, I was able to complete one of the Manning liveProjects dealing with Spring Boot.

The first 6 chapters will drag on. Dependency injection is useful, but not the most exciting topic in the world. I feel it’s an effective approach though, to go slowly through the fundamentals in order to learn them well.

The real fun starts with Spring Boot, Spring MVC, and Thymeleaf in chapter 7. The focus on templating is very minimal, but enough to get going. The book moves on from templating to APIs, and stays focused on the latter until the end.

The teaching style is very focused and elementary. There is a lot of repetition, especially in the beginning. The coverage is just deep enough for the reader to start swimming.

I have spent many hours trying to find a resource that explained spring from top to bottom, but they all leave so many aspects untouched. They all either assume you know basic spring, don't care enough to know what spring is or just jump from one topic to the other leaving you with some working code that you know works but nothing else.

This is the first resource that actually takes the time to explain what spring is thoroyghly and i couldn't be happier. A must read if you're getting into spring

In school for computer science not learning anything relevant. Just there wasting time and money for the piece of paper. With books like this you don’t need school. Amazing content taught me everything I need to know about the Spring framework. 5 stars better than anything I have been β€œtaught” at university

I recieved this order a few days ago and can't stop reading it. The last time I used the Spring framework was in 2018. A lot has changed. I'm now using Spring framework 6.0.2. This book is refreshing.

When considering all of the changes since 2018, I felt like I knew nothing about the Spring framework. That was until I started reading this book. If you want to learn the Spring framework or need a refresher, this is absolutely the book for you (in my humble opinion) .
