How Cybersecurity Really Works is an engaging introduction to the field of cybersecurity. You'll learn how attackers operate, as well as how to defend yourself and organizations against online attacks.

How Cybersecurity Really Works is the perfect introduction to cybersecurity. Whether you’re a computer science student or a business professional, it will teach you the basics without all the jargon.

This beginners guide covers different types of attacks, common tactics used by online adversaries, and defensive strategies you can use to protect yourself. You’ll learn what security professionals do, what an attack looks like from a cybercriminal’s viewpoint, and how to implement sophisticated cybersecurity measures on your own devices.

In addition, you’ll find explanations of topics like malware, phishing, and social engineering attacks, coupled with real-world examples and hands-on exercises to help you apply what you’ve learned. You’ll explore ways to bypass access controls, prevent infections from worms and viruses, and protect your cloud accounts from attackers.

You’ll also learn how to:

• Analyze emails to detect phishing attempts
• Use SQL injection to attack a website
• Examine malware from the safety of a sandbox environment
• Use the command line to evaluate and improve your computer and network security
• Deploy encryption and hashing to protect your files
• Create a comprehensive risk management plan
You can’t afford to ignore cybersecurity anymore, but attackers won’t wait while you read a long technical manual. That’s why
How Cybersecurity Really Works teaches you just the essentials you need to think beyond antivirus and make the right decisions to keep the online monsters at bay.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"An excellent resource . . . The chapters scaffold in a beautiful fashion leaving the reader with a concrete foundation of cyber knowledge. Sam’s ability to explain abstract or complex concepts in a simplistic, digestible, and visual way is a major strength of this book. Novices or anyone interested in learning about cybersecurity, this is the book for you!"
—Dr. Pauline Mosley, Pace University, Professor of Information Technology

"This book is an excellent and practical introduction to cybersecurity for a beginner. . . . Sam’s examples are clear, and will be relevant to those looking for their first job in cybersecurity, pivoting to security from another field, or who just want to improve the security of their home network. . . . I enjoyed reading it."
—Jamie Winterton, Director, Strategy at Global Security Initiative at Arizona State University

“Our absolute favorite cybersecurity book . . . if you’re a total beginner looking to learn the ins and outs of cybersecurity, you’ve found your book right here.”
—Geena SQL, RealToughCandy.com

“An excellent book for beginners because it takes the mystery out of doing cybersecurity right.”
—Giovanni Hale, Goodreads Reviewer

“Easy to read . . . Useful for undergraduate CyberSec courses.”
—Dr. Larry Leibrock, Professor at Idaho State University

Sam Grubb is a father, author, writer, security expert, cat hoarder, and generally pretty funny person. He enjoys writing science and speculative fiction, threat reports, and long diatribes about compliance. In his off time, he plays video games and Warhammer 40K, reads, works slowly through his back catalog of textbooks and training videos, and hangs out with his family. He is a member of Red Octopus Theater group and enjoys doing pretty much any form of comedy. Except clowning. Or mimes. Or plays. Ok, so it's pretty much just sketch and improv.

Sam currently works as the Cyber Defense Operations Manager at Centennial Bank. Previously, he’s worked as a Senior Cybersecurity Consultant at Edafio. He is an expert in security awareness, risk management, policy and compliance. His true passion lies in threat analysis and he is currently growing his threat detection and intelligence, incident response, and digital forensic skills. Previously, Sam has worked as a Computer Science and Cybersecurity high school teacher, an Information Assurance instructor for the National Guard, a librarian, and a researcher for a military headgear museum. Yes, he knows too much about the American M1 helmet and would be delighted to tell you about it.

Sam has a Masters in Military History from Norwich University. He is an author of How Cybersecurity Really Works: A Hands-On Guide for Total Beginners, published by No Starch Press. He has also written for Arkansas Business Magazine and other publications. Currently, he is working on another book with No Starch Press on using PowerShell for security.

Sam has a passion for teaching and believes anyone can learn anything, given the right instruction. He believes that security should be public and accessible to everyone. He is open to opportunities to help create a rich, diverse, and equitable cybersecurity field.

Very useful book, still working thru the text. Kindle format is not my preferred option.

Hopefully the paper version will appear soon

An Advanced Cybersecurity book would be an interesting follow on

Still working thru this book. I find the section giving readers opportunities to use their computer v useful, especially for e- Mail headers. The work seems a bit short on browsers, clone sites, ‘useful’ downloads that contain more than expected, certificates, https lock and certs. Also some notes on other issues users may face -RDP. This book worth the price - helped me a lot to be more informed and aware of the threats users face.
