From the Publisher

How has your experience helped you write this book?

My professional background focuses on information security and cybersecurity operations, whereby I develop and implement security policies and procedures and am responsible for conducting both red and blue teaming exercises to identify and reduce cyberattacks and threats and mitigate cyber risks.

My cybersecurity background played an important role during the writing of this book, as it enabled me to create practical exercises to demonstrate how real-world techniques and procedures are used by industry professionals, with the intent to help readers efficiently develop the hands-on skills needed to break into the cybersecurity industry as aspiring ethical hackers and pentesters.

Furthermore, my academic background spans a decade as a cybersecurity educator, which helps me break down complex topics into easy-to-understand content to ensure all readers can follow along while maintaining a beginner-friendly and student-centric approach.

What parts of The Ultimate Kali Linux Book are your favorites and why, and what’s new in this edition?

My favorite parts of The Ultimate Kali Linux Book are the chapters on Command and Control (C2) operations and Advanced Wireless PenTesting. I’ve always enjoyed working with C2 setups during pentesting, and wireless pentesting has been especially exciting to me because of the abundance of devices that emit sensitive information ripe for analysis.

This edition introduces many updates, including guidance on setting up Kali Linux 2024.1, deeper insights into ethical hacking tactics, and new labs on web application security and social engineering. The virtual lab setup has been improved for beginners, with a new dedicated chapter for Ubuntu Desktop users. Additionally, a new chapter on Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) focuses on collecting and analyzing publicly available information.

The Ultimate Kali Linux Book is a friendly and down-to-earth guide that takes you from setting up your first virtual lab to mastering advanced penetration testing techniques. It starts by walking you through the basics of installing Kali Linux and configuring your environment so you feel confident even if you have never used virtualization before. The clear, step-by-step instructions make it hard to get lost as you explore tools like Nmap and Metasploit.

As you move deeper into the book, you learn by doing real-world exercises. Each chapter builds on the last, guiding you through gathering information, finding vulnerabilities, and exploiting systems in a way that feels logical and clear. Sections on wireless hacking, Active Directory attacks, and post-exploitation teach you practical skills without feeling like a dry tutorial. You can follow along and see how each technique fits into a professional penetration testing workflow.

What makes this book stand out is its focus on both offensive and defensive perspectives. You not only learn how to launch attacks but also why they work and how to defend against them. Explanations of common pitfalls and defensive strategies remind you that ethical hacking is about improving security rather than just breaking in. By the end, you will have a well-rounded understanding of Kali Linux and feel ready to tackle real challenges with confidence.

I bought The Ultimate Kali Linux Book thinking I’d just learn a few commands… now I’m sitting in the dark, hoodie on, feeling like I could shut down the Pentagon (don’t worry NSA, I said feel like).

This book doesn’t just teach you Linux — it teaches you respect for the terminal. Every chapter feels like leveling up in a hacker RPG. I went from “how do I open the terminal?” to “I just pinged myself by accident but it looked cool.”

Easy to follow, super detailed, and it makes you sound 300% smarter when you tell people what you’re reading.

Now every time my Wi-Fi acts up, I squint at the router like I’m about to run a penetration test.

10/10 would recommend if you want to feel dangerous while actually just learning stuff responsibly. ⚡
