Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.
Learn more how customers reviews work on AmazonThe router is great. Decent price. Has wifi 6. Had no issues with a variety of devices. Speeds are blazing. Signal strength is also quite impressive---I am able to get connection through a metal storefront door that’s 50 feet away, a wall, and a bunch of metal-containing boxed objects. Never needed to restart it and it’s been like a year.
The user interface is good.. I’m used to older routers, which were quite busy. This one’s seems cleaner. There’s a guest network option too. I didn’t do the signing up to any service with them. Seemed like a gimmick.
One thing I would have liked to have though would be an option for it to provide power over ethernet to connect a security camera I have with only 1 wire. Trying to find out if it can do power over ethernet online was impossible. No mention one way or the other, but it would be a selling point and they would mention it if it was available. The power chord for the router is thin (as usual for routers), and I’m guessing if it was able to feed power it would have a beefier power chord itself.
One thing I did not try was to make it act as a wifi repeater. So can’t comment on that.
All in all, for the price, the performance is great for what I got it to do. Would get it for the house if the interwebs was fast enough to justify a wifi-6 router there.
I don't like to post reviews for a product until I've had a good chance to use it for a while. So, now a review.
I like this router, it has decent range (I have to place my router in a less-than-optimal place). Day to day usage is good, I have only had one instance where I thought a reboot was necessary. Internal network and internet speed is good and consistent.
It supports DDNS via its own internal client (though I have to renew my DNS entry every 30 days-not Netgear's issue).
I like to have a few devices "hard-coded" to specific IP addresses, and the router supports this, although finding the section in the UI to actually do this is not as clear as I think it could be.
The router also supports "port-range" forwarding and triggering. My previous router could ONLY specify single ports for forwarding, which was very restrictive for some applications.
There is a "guest mode" supported, also.
What I really like about the router is the lack of disruption when changing most parameters. Some routers require a reboot for parameter changes to take effect. I do not recall this ever happening while changing settings on this router.
The router supports VPN, gaming applications, NTP servers, and internet access restrictions. Internet sites can be blocked by keyword, time, and service type.
Of course, the more common router features are fully supported as well.
I don't like buying a "pig-in-a-poke". Many router vendors do not provide their router manuals on their websites, which is a red flag to me. If I can't review the manual to determine suitability of a given product to my needs, then I prefer not to take a chance with my money. Netgear does an outstanding job of providing easy access to their manuals. If you want to ensure a router is suitable for you, check the manual first.
This router works very well, until your one year security subscription expires and they cut you off unexpectedly. I did not realize that there is a required renewal of the security subscription annually which costs more than a brand new router. Maybe it was my fault that I did not catch this when I purchased the router. They cut off my internet service in the middle of the night and will not turn it back on unless I pay for at least a one year subscription for over $100. BEWARE.
So, real quick, its SUPER important to point out that Amazon mixes the reviews for both the AC and AX router. So when you see people complaining about how it can't reach gigabit speeds or mention the age, they're talking about the AC router. For gigabit speeds, you're going to need an AX router (regardless of brand).
With that out of the way, yeah, this is a solid router if you can take advantage of it (I have 1 gigabit through Google Fiber). Wired gets me just above 900 mbps, which is what you'd expect (you'll typically never hit your actual paid-for speed, even on CAT6 ethernet). Wifi I'm able to frequently get just under 800mbps, though it required swapping to a less congested radio band. That said, I was still getting just under 700 on the standard one that it started on.
Setup was easy. My only real complaint is that the app constantly tries to sell me parental control features every time I open it. I do also wish the wifi signal was just a wee bit stronger. It made it through one wall, but struggles to make it through more than that without a huge decrease in speed (dropped to just barely 500 through 2 rooms). Would also be nice to actually get gigabit wifi, but that's not really something that's possible with a router at this cost (and whatever receiver you have for PC/laptop).
Overall happy with it
I purchased this router to go with the new modem I purchased, because I was tired of paying a monthly rental fee for the cable modem/router combo that my cable company supplied. I don't really like having a modem/router combo, only because if one or the other stop working or have glitches, it usually will all stop working. I purchased an Surfboard modem and then purchased this router to pair with it. It was very easy to connect it...just had to connect the power cord to the router and connect the ethernet line it from the modem. The only problem I had was the Surfboard app, You connect it all up through the app...it wanted me to scan the QR code, but I couldn't find one. I finally saw it....it was on the clear wrapping that was on the router...I had thrown it away. I hadn't noticed that the QR code and the temporary router username and password were on a little label stuck to the clear wrap. After I realized that I threw it away and retrieved it from the trash, I was up and running in about a minute. This router works great with my Surfboard modem.
Wanted to upgrade my Spectrum router that they charge $5 for every month. The netgear router has definitely been an improvement so far, it covers my 1200 sqft apartment without any issues. Able to stream on multiple devices at the same time too without any buffering.
The netgear nighthawk app that works with the router, lets you see what devices are connected, peform speed test, edit wifi settings, and overall a solid app.
Overall solid purchase, the router itself was very easy to setup, plugged it into my Spectrum modem and set it up through the nighhawk app. Took around 15 minutes to get it from out of the box to working.

I bought this thinking I would upgrade from my old Motorola Arris AC (wi-fi 5) router. I pay for 300mbps, but the old router was giving me an average of 75mbps speeds. Not that it caused any issues, but I just wanted the speeds I was paying for, and bought this Netgear for that purpose. After getting it hooked up I immediately got 375Mbps speeds. I was psyched! Problem is, everything else I tried doing was a disaster! Like other reviews mentioned, the router cuts out/drops signal constantly! Suddenly my iPhone Wi-Fi calls kept dropping. Video calls became impossible. Simple things like looking at my Instagram feed weren't even doable. I had to use my cellular service in my apartment just to use my phone! Streaming to my Firestick would buffer. The router drops signal literally minute to minute, then reconnect itself. Problem is, the router cuts off everything you're doing in the process. Btw....it's connected to a newer model 1GB modem, in case you're wondering. Downloading files are impossible! The constant drops caused corrupted files! Staring at my MacBook screen for a couple of minutes, and I'd watch the signal drop and reconnect without two minutes passing between. Making matters worse, even when it did manage to download a file, download speeds were less than 1mbps! The 375Mbps speedtest speeds were nothing more than a mirage. This router can't even function for basic, everyday tasks. It's completely useless. I wanted so much to like this router. Fact is, the initial speedtest results didn't tell the story at all about how this router ACTUALLY functions (it doesn't).
There's literally nothing positive I can write about it. Seriously save yourself the time and look elsewhere. For now I'm going back to my old AC router, which works fine.

My older TP link archer was starting to slow down and I was getting a fraction of the speed I paid for. Couldn’t even stream without buffering every few seconds and resets weren’t helping. Saw this one at a great price and with excellent reviews so I had to get it. The netgear app is also a great feature for seeing the router status without doing it on the computer. Thanks for this I have consistent internet speeds, zero buffering, and I actually get faster speeds than what I technically pay for. I’ve already recommended this router to multiple people needing to upgrade but not wanting to break the bank.
