The MT8733 includes two telephone ports that support standard (landline) telephones and other devices. The MT8733 is designed to work with Comcast Xfinity voice service only.
To use the telephone ports, first, make sure you have subscribed to Xfinity voice service. This service may be provisioned to support either one phone line on TEL1 or two phone lines on both TEL1 and TEL2, with two different phone numbers.
You can connect almost any standard telephone equipment to an MT8733 telephone port. This includes almost anything that connects using an RJ11 phone plug telephones, cordless phone base stations, answering machines, etc. (If you want to connect a security system, check with the security system manufacturer for compatibility).
You can connect individual devices, or you can connect multiple devices that plug into the same phone line. (Their Ringer Equivalence Numbers need to add up to 5 or less.) One way to connect multiple devices is to plug the MT8733 phone port into a jack connected to existing telephone wiring. Before doing this, make sure to disconnect the wiring totally from the telephone companyβs network demarc. This is normally done by unplugging a phone cord at the jack nearest to where the phone line comes into your home. After you unplug that phone cord, check that none of the phones on that line gets a dial tone when you go off-hook. If they donβt get a dial tone, itβs safe to connect a phone cord from one of the lineβs jacks to an MT8733 phone jack. After you do that and power up the MT8733, all the phones on that line should get a dial tone. You may want to attach a cordless phone base station to the MT8733, and then place cordless handsets wherever you like. The Battery Purchase or Replacement section describes how you can make sure you have phone service even if your MT8733 loses power.
What do the TEL1 and TEL2 light behaviors mean?
TEL1 and TEL2 lights are green.
Blinking: Establishing voice service OR Phone off hook/Call Active
ON: Phone on-hook / Ready for calls
OFF: Phone service not provisioned
How do I make and Receive Calls?
You can make and receive calls through connected telephone equipment just as you would with any other landline telephone service. Remember to dial 1 before long-distance calls within the United States. Check with Xfinity for international dialing.

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we donβt use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.
Learn more how customers reviews work on AmazonI purchased the MT8733 mainly due for the DOCSIS 3.1 specification. I had a relatively newer Netgear cable model with 3.0 specs but found it limited in internet speed (my xfinity service has 1 gig). I have been amazed at how much faster speed I obtain with the MT8733 - slightly over 800 Mbps versus my Netgear modem with 150 Mbps. I wasn't expecting that much improvement.
The only issue was using the Xfinity app to activate the modem. At first I disconnected the Netgear modem and hooked up the Motorola but the app would not work. Finally left the Netgear connected, powered up the Motorola; the app then did work. Also recommend down loading the Motosync app to set up the MT8733.
Summary:
I eagerly replaced our overpriced Xfinity modem with the Motorola MT8733 VOIP-enabled modem hoping to save $180 a year in rental fees. What a horrendous mistake! This has been the least reliable modem/router I have ever purchased. I am going to just eat the $400 and buy an alternative modem like the Arris T25 or Netgear CM2050V. NEVER buying a Motorola again.
Details:
Installation was straightforward but the Motosync mobile app was hard to find (made by "Minim" not "Motorola"). Once I found it, I was unable to get the Motosync app to work because the signup page kept failing. Lame. Okay whatever...it's not necessary.
After the device came online, the handshake with Comcast kept failing. I unplugged the modem several times to get it connected. The admin console for this device is about the worst I've ever used. The page routinely fails to load requiring a reboot.
Now the worst part. From day one, the modem has dropped connectivity on a nearly daily basis. It doesn't recover without a hard reboot. For a several weeks, I tried factory resetting it, analyzed the wifi spectrum for interference, adjusted wiring, replaced cables, replaced splitters, had Comcast come out and analyze line signal noise issues. The modem kept dropping wifi. So I finally reached out to Motorola support. Even after providing them with event logs and connection values, they kept pointing at Comcast. After a few weeks of back and forth, they finally agreed to replace the device. It took two months to receive a replacement. Guess what, the replacement exhibited the same issues!
I gave up and asked Amazon for a refund. To my surprise, Amazon very generously offered me a refund minus the restocking fee. I replaced it with the Netgear CM2050V VOIP modem with a TP-Link AX3000 router. there have been ZERO issues. Setup was a breeze and both modem and router maintain stable, speedy connections. Speeds have shot up from <100mbps on WiFi to ~700mbps. The admin console is top notch. Itβs just a breath of fresh air.
Summary:
Based on my experience, I would not buy the MT8733 product because it's poorly manufactured and just isnβt stable. The software sucks. Avoid Motorola!
At one time my old Wifi modem did well for my home but as technology advances cable signals change and I noticed that my wifi data dropped significantly and knew I needed an upgrade my 5 year old system. My current carrier is Grande/Astound and I recommend before buying any system that you check with your carrier what equipment they say is compatible for their network. Typically you can find this on their internet site. I didn't want to buy a cable modem and a seperate wifi system. I have a single story home 2800 sqft home and I had a central location to place it so I saved some dollars and a cable modem with wifi router built in. If you have a larger home or 2 story home you may want to conider gettng a wifi router that has Wifi base modules that you can place around the house.
Anyways the set up was breeze the directions included assumes your provider is Xfinity. if you have this provider it might be plug and play based on the directions but for me once I had it all setup I had to contact my carrier and give them my MAC address. If your a Grande/Astound customer I recommend using their tech support chat line on their website. If you try and call the help line the automated phone system and options kicks you to setting a time for a tech to come to your place which comes at a price.
Once I gave the Chat line tech the model and serial number and Mac address I was up and running in 5 min and pretty much the whole house is getting 300Mbs to 400Mbs depending on what room your in. The system is capablie of a Gig but can't speak to that right now since I'm only paying for 300Mbs
This modem/Router works very well with reasonable range and speed. Since it was a reconditioned product it was not reset to the factory default settings. As a result, I was unable to activate the internet and the voice functions and had to call an Xfinity technician to help activate and configure. The "Motosync" app is not very helpful.
If you are looking to purchase your own Modem/Router combo to avoid paying expensive equipment rental fees, look at other choices. I fully agree with a lot of the single star reviews regarding the reliability of this device. In the years I fought with this router, it was constantly locking up (admin page unresponsive until you power cycle the device), losing connections to devices like the printer, and dropping the 5Ghz signal randomly for no understandable reason. In most cases, my first step in trying to resolve issues like this is to make sure it is running the latest firmware. This is the big "Catch 22" Gotcha! issue. Motorola will not let you manually flash the firmware on this device. They expect your ISP to do any firmware updates. But most ISPs (like Comcast/Xfinity in my case) refuse to touch any customer owned devices. The great Catch 22 situation: You can't update the firmware yourself, and the ISP refuses to. You are left with an expensive boat anchor running whatever crappy firmware existed when it was first purchased and activated for the first time. Not a good long term choice in a BYO device situation.
Have had years of experience with similar devices by other manufacturers. Netgear always lasted till the warranty ran out and then failed. The Motorola MT8733 is pricy but you get what you pay for in these combo devices. Super stable so far (not a single reboot or dropped wifi), extremely fast WiFi. Perfect voice for VOIP/Xfinity voice landline. Easy setup (it's more than the 10 minutes some claim here, but is the fastest/easiest setup in 20 years of using this kind of device). Motorola tech confirmed they will push firmware updates, in cooperation with Xfinity. My gut with Netgear failures in the past is that they just did not push firmware updates, and stopped working for that reason. I've read where more expensive modems can last 5 years or even longer, so the math works versus renting from Comcast for $14/month. Less expensive devices have lasted 2 years or so in my experience. I believe this is the best cable modem/router/voice modem out there. Will update my review if anything changes.
Update 2: Finally got fed up with the constant issues and bought a separate router. I set the gateway to bridge mode and had to separately turn off the radios so I wouldn't have dueling wifi networks. All of my issues have gone away. The router portion of this thing is causing your issues. Modem portion works fine.
Update: Still garbage. I tried to turn off beam forming but a ISP update undid those changes so everything had connection issues. Now when there are problems (which is more than weekly) it is more than just the thermostat. JUUNK! I HATE THIS THING!
I have had this for about 3 months. Setup seemed fine until I noticed my thermostat wouldn't stay connected. I had to reboot the gateway to get it to reconnect. That would work for a random number of days before it would disconnect again. I turned off beam forming and separated the 5 Ghz frequency because the thermostat only does 2.4 Ghz. That only worked for a little while and now I have even more problems. It changes channel settings seemingly on its own and everything gets dropped. Wish I have never bought it.
You would think for how much Motorola wants for this router it would work better. Xfinity told me I had to upgrade my router to get their full speed. This was the only one they recommended that had built-in wifi and could handle a phone line. Well, I have not seen an increase in speed and my wifi devices lose the wifi network at least once a week. My Kindle Fire loose the the network 2-3 times a day.
Motorola support is next to non-existant. Email only, no phone supprt. And I don't think English is their first language. They are slow to respond and never seem to understand the issue.
Stay away from this device if you can.
