Guide
Located in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto, Chion-in is the head temple of the Jōdo Shū (Pure Land Sect) of Buddhism and is connected to Hōnen (1133-1212), the founder of the sect. Hōnen taught at Chion-in that chanting the name of Amida (Sanskrit: Amitabha) leads to salvation and spent his final years here as well.
Respect and Etiquette
Chion-in is a sacred place for faith. To ensure everyone can worship in comfort and peace, please be considerate of others.
Conducting tours and using microphones or megaphones are not permitted.
Commercial photography requires prior permission.
Please remove your shoes before entering the hall and refrain from photography or recording inside.

Buildings large and small are spread throughout the temple grounds. The following buildings on the temple grounds have been designated National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties.
About the Gardens
The Hōjō and Yūzen’en gardens are open to the public. Please enjoy a leisurely stroll around our gardens.
