"We are wired to connect. Neuroscience has discovered that our brains very design makes it sociable, inexorably drawn into an intimate brain to brain linkup whenever we engage with another person." Daniel Goleman – Prologue – Social Intelligence

Emotional and Social Intelligence (ESI) is defined as a set of competencies demonstrating the ability one has to recognize their behaviors, moods, and impulses, and to manage them best according to the situation. This course will give you the tools you need to be emotionally and socially intelligent in your workplace. Having the ability to master ESI gives employees a distinct advantage in their positions. It allows them to access their emotional center while managing their relationships with their team members. Competencies associated with emotional and social intelligence are often what separates an average performer from a great one. And, unlike our overall intelligence, emotional intelligence can be learned and improved over time. In this course, we will explain the value of emotional and social intelligence for professional success. We'll assess current emotional and social intelligence skills and you will discover the Foundational 4 Quadrants of Emotional and Social Intelligence (ESI) to understand, use and manage emotions. We will explain how stress can impact application of emotional and social intelligence skills, and reflect upon needed actions to take to create connections and build relationships for greater professional effectiveness.

In this module, you will be able to define and explain the value of emotional and social intelligence for professional success. You will be able to assess your current emotional and social intelligence skills and discover the four quadrants of ESI. You will be able to explain the importance of ESI in the work place. You will be able to discover your own emotions and implement strategies to develop your emotional and social intelligence.

Frequently asked questions

You'll learn how to understand your emotions, manage them more effectively, and build better connections with other people at work. The course starts with what emotional and social intelligence means and where you are now, then moves into handling stress, listening with more empathy, and building stronger relationships. You'll apply the material through activities like an EQ self-assessment and exercises on pausing before you react or separating facts from emotions.

No, you don't need prior experience in emotional intelligence to begin. The course starts with the basics, then guides you through self-assessments, reflection, and workplace examples instead of assuming earlier study. What helps most is being open to examining your own reactions and interactions honestly.

Yes, it's beginner-friendly if you want an accessible introduction to emotional and social intelligence in a professional setting. The course uses short lessons, readings, self-assessments, quizzes, and guided reflection, so you build understanding as you go. It may feel less suitable if you want a deep research treatment of psychology rather than a skills-focused course.

Expect about 13 hours in total. At around 10 hours a week, many learners could finish in about 1 to 2 weeks, with time spread across short lessons, readings, and reflection work. The course includes lessons, readings, self-assessments, discussions, quizzes, and reflection-based assignments.

There aren't technical labs or a big final project, but there is plenty of applied practice. You'll complete self-assessments, guided exercises, discussions, quizzes, and written reflections tied to real interpersonal situations. For example, you might practice the pause technique or sort statements into facts and emotions, so each idea gets used rather than just explained.

You'll work through the main parts of emotional and social intelligence, including self-awareness, self-management, empathy, and relationship skills. The course also covers ways to handle stress, ask for and use feedback, listen more effectively, and build rapport in everyday interactions. Overall, it helps you improve how you respond under pressure and how you connect with other people.

After finishing, you should be able to spot emotional triggers more quickly and respond with more intention in conversations and team settings. For example, you could revisit a tense exchange, separate the facts from your emotional reaction, and choose a calmer, more effective next step. You should also be able to use empathy, listening, and feedback more deliberately to strengthen working relationships.

It's more concept-first with guided self-application than project-heavy. The course explains ideas clearly, then reinforces them through self-assessments, discussions, reflections, and short exercises. It's a good fit if you want to improve everyday behavior, not complete a large standalone project.

Choose this course if you want emotional and social intelligence taught through everyday work situations rather than only broad theory. It moves step by step from understanding your own emotions to managing stress, practicing empathy, and improving communication, with self-assessments and reflection assignments woven throughout. If you want a beginner-friendly course that helps you change how you show up with other people at work, this is a good fit.
