Master the interpersonal skills and therapeutic communication techniques that transform good caregivers into exceptional CNAs. This course uses cinematic storytelling to explore complex patient relationships and the professional competencies essential for working with special populations, including people with mental illness and developmental disabilities.
Through the stories of Helen, Michelle, and their families, you'll develop critical soft skills including active listening, empathy, cultural competency, problem-solving, and time management. You'll learn trauma-informed care approaches, de-escalation techniques for challenging behaviors, and how to recognize and report signs of abuse and neglect. The course addresses sensitive topics like working with people experiencing depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicidal thoughts, as well as understanding unconscious bias and discrimination in healthcare settings. What makes this course unique is our immersive approach to navigating difficult conversations and ethical dilemmas. You'll witness realistic scenarios showing therapeutic communication in action, boundary-setting with combative residents, and supporting people who have experienced trauma. You'll also explore teamwork, professionalism, and flexibility as core CNA competencies. By the end of this course, you'll complete your personalized CNA career plan and understand the full scope of professional nursing assistant practice.
In this course, you'll develop the professional skills CNAs need to care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health conditions. You'll meet Helen, who lives with bipolar disorder and HIV, and Michelle, who lives with a developmental disability. Through their stories, you'll learn effective communication strategies, power skills like active listening and empathy, and how to provide meaningful support while maintaining your own well-being. By the end, you'll understand what it takes to be not just a skilled CNA, but a truly professional and compassionate one. Let's get started.

Frequently asked questions
No. This is a career exploration course, not a state-approved CNA certification program. While you'll learn about nursing assistant responsibilities, patient care skills, and healthcare settings, this course does not replace the hands-on clinical training and classroom hours required for CNA certification. To become a certified nursing assistant, you must complete a state-approved CNA training program that includes supervised clinical practice and pass your state's certification exam. This course helps you understand the CNA role and guides you in researching local training programs as part of your personalized career plan.
To access the course materials, assignments and to earn a Certificate, you will need to purchase the Certificate experience when you enroll in a course. You can try a Free Trial instead, or apply for Financial Aid. The course may offer 'Full Course, No Certificate' instead. This option lets you see all course materials, submit required assessments, and get a final grade. This also means that you will not be able to purchase a Certificate experience.
When you enroll in the course, you get access to all of the courses in the Specialization, and you earn a certificate when you complete the work. Your electronic Certificate will be added to your Accomplishments page - from there, you can print your Certificate or add it to your LinkedIn profile.
