"15 Big Ones" is the twentieth studio album by The Beach Boys. It had been three years since their preceding studio album. And the first Beach Boys album produced by Brian Wilson since "Pet Sounds," ten years earlier. It was recorded January 30, 1976 to May 15, 1976. At one point during the recordings, it was decided that a double album was to be released: one album of oldies and another of original material. In the end, a compromise of both new originals and covers was decided. "15 Big Ones" was named for their fifteen years in the business and for the fact that it had fifteen tracks. It was released in late June, reaching #8 in the US and going gold. It reached #31 in the UK.

On the sleeve, 'It's OK' is credited to Wizzard. Word has it that only three members were featured, namely Roy Wood (drums), Nick Pentelow and Mike Burney (saxes). Roy had always been a huge fan of The Beach Boys, and their participation came about after they visited Brian while Wizzard were touring the US in autumn 1974.

Despite the mixed content of this album, this pressing sounds pretty great. Much better than the congested, loud rips on streaming. For a Beach Boys completist like me this is worth the $5 I paid

"15 Mediocre Ones" doesn't sound as promising, but it's more accurate. There are times when the production faintly reminds you of what the Beach Boys are capable of, but they're few and far between. "Had To Phone Ya" is fun, "Back Home" has an absolutely inane lyric but sounds great, and "Just Once In My Life" is the only cover that really works. This pressing is fine, there's depth to the low end, harmonies are clean and clear, for better or worse, and the soundstage is wide and full. My copy has a skip at the very beginning of "Rock N' Roll Music", but otherwise plays nice and clean.

I don't know much about the Beach Boys outside of Pet Sounds. Just to say that, not knowing the songs, this album sounds good. Bass is pretty fat. And it is entertaining. There are none of the big hits... So I am not sure why it is calls the 15 big ones. For the price though, no complaints.
