Periyar University Admission Experience for MCA

Last Updated : 29 Oct, 2024

When I was in the 3rd year of BCA, I applied for the TANCET exam, specifically for the Periyar University entrance exam. I began preparing for TANCET and focused only on the easier topics to get a good score. When the TANCET exam came, I attended it, but I made a mistake. Instead of answering only the questions I knew, I attempted both the ones I knew and the ones I didn’t. After the exam, my friend asked how I performed when I came out of the hall. I told him I attempted all the questions. He immediately reacted and scolded me, saying, "So, you knew the answer to all the questions, right? Hey, you’re mad! There were negative marks for wrong answers." Finally, the result came, and I scored only 38 percentile.

Next, I took the Periyar University entrance exam for MCA (AICTE approved). It started at 10 o’clock and ended at 11:30 AM. Out of 50 marks, I scored 22. After the exam, they told us to take a break and reassemble at 2 o’clock in the Seminar Hall of the Computer Science Department. I was nervous inside, unsure if I would be selected or not. The selection process was based on 50% of the UG score and 50% of the entrance exam score.

I was so anxious that I didn’t even have lunch. When I went to the hall, the University VC, registrar, and controller of exams addressed us about the university and the course. After that, they started announcing the selections category-wise: OBC, BC, MBC, etc. For OBC, 9 seats were filled out of 30. Then they called the BC category, where I belong. In the entrance exam, the previously selected students had scored 32, 28, and 25, while I had scored 22. A student with a score lower than mine was called before me, but my name wasn’t announced yet. I was overwhelmed with fear. Three seats in the BC category were filled, and then they called my name, twice. I was stunned at that moment, and the person next to me told me, "They are calling your name, go!" I went to the stage.

They asked for the original documents, but I didn’t have them at the time because I had also applied to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, through my TANCET score, and my friend had also applied there. Both the university entrance exam and Bharathiar counseling were scheduled for the same day, so I gave my documents to my friend. Both of us had decided to study at Bharathiar University. Unfortunately, we were not selected in the counseling. I urged my friend to quickly bring my documents back, but he couldn’t reach Salem in time. Meanwhile, the admission process at Periyar was already ongoing. One of the selectors asked for my documents, and I told her, "Ma'am, I didn’t bring them. I was expecting only the exam today, not the selection as well. I have informed my friend to bring the documents; he’s on his way." She replied, "Okay, submit them quickly," and left.

Time was passing, and my friend still hadn’t arrived. As the day was ending, the same ma'am came back and asked, "What happened?" I told her, "He’s on the way, ma'am." She scolded me, "Why are you wasting our time?" and then said, "Come tomorrow and submit the documents." She added, "You are noticeable in regular class time," and left. It scared me a bit, but I was also happy and went home.

My friend was eventually selected at Bharathiar University. How? Because 2-3 students declined to pay the fee on the same day, so the seat became available to him. The staff called him and asked him to pay the fee, and that’s how he got his seat in the Periyar University.
