The journey of preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is often described as a test of endurance, intellect, and mental fortitude. My experience was filled with ups and downs, moments of hope, disappointment, and eventual realization. Achieving a score of 91 percentile during my Class 12 attempt and improving it to 98 percentile in my drop year was significant, yet I still couldn't clear JEE Advanced. Despite this outcome, I discovered a new path by pursuing my engineering degree at an NIT, and here’s how this experience shaped me.
During my Class 12th, I, like many others, balanced school exams and JEE preparation. Scoring the 91 percentile was a commendable result, but I knew it wasn’t enough for the top IITs. While the percentile was respectable, it left me feeling as though I hadn’t fully unlocked my potential. The vast syllabus, coupled with managing school boards alongside JEE preparation, proved to be an uphill battle. Believing I had more to give led me to take a drop year to focus solely on JEE.
Taking a drop year was a challenging decision, but I was determined to improve my score and clear JEE Advanced. That year became an emotional roller-coaster. My routine focused entirely on mastering Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, with mock tests, study hours, and revisions as my constant companions.
My hard work paid off when I saw my percentile rise from 91 to 98. It was a massive improvement, and for a moment, I felt on the verge of achieving my IIT dream. However, JEE Advanced presented a different challenge. Despite my improved percentile in JEE Mains, I couldn’t clear Advanced, which was a tough pill to swallow.
Initially, not clearing JEE Advanced felt like a personal failure, especially after dedicating an entire year to preparation. Self-doubt crept in, and I questioned whether all my effort had been in vain. Facing setbacks can be difficult when expectations are high, both from yourself and those around you. Over time, I realized that success isn’t always about reaching a specific goal—sometimes it’s about how you handle the detours along the way.
When one door closes, another opens. Although I didn’t clear JEE Advanced, my JEE Mains score of 98 percentile secured me admission to one of the prestigious National Institutes of Technology (NIT). Initially, this felt like a compromise, but as time passed, I began to recognize the immense opportunities NIT offered.
NITs have their own legacy, and the environment is competitive and inspiring. The facilities, faculty, and diverse student body opened new avenues for my growth, academically and personally. I came to appreciate that success in JEE Advanced, while prestigious, isn’t the only path to a rewarding career. The skills and resilience I developed during my preparation year became my greatest assets in navigating the challenges of engineering education.
Looking back, I understand that the JEE journey is more than just cracking an exam. It’s about pushing your limits, learning to manage pressure, and picking yourself up after setbacks. While I didn’t achieve my dream of attending an IIT, I found a new dream at NIT, where I’m thriving and learning every day.
The JEE preparation process taught me resilience, adaptability, and the ability to appreciate broader opportunities life offers. Ultimately, success isn’t defined by a single exam or institution—it’s about making the most of where you land and turning it into a launchpad for the future.
In conclusion, my JEE experience wasn’t a straight line to IIT but led me to a place where I’m building a solid foundation for my future. While not clearing JEE Advanced was disappointing, I’m grateful for the lessons learned and the new beginnings that came with my admission to NIT. Every step of the journey has its purpose, and I’m excited to see where this path takes me next.
