Lovely Professional University, Phagwara Campus Experience for BCA

I am currently in my final year of Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) at Lovely Professional University (LPU). My time here has been a mix of experiences, challenges, and opportunities that have contributed to my academic and personal growth. Here’s a glimpse into my journey at LPU:

About the Campus

LPU’s campus spans a vast 650 acres, offering world-class academic and recreational facilities. The infrastructure includes:

• Modern Classrooms: Well-equipped learning spaces with advanced technology.
• High-Tech Laboratories: Specialized Google and Mac labs for hands-on learning.
• Sports and Recreation: Maintained sports grounds and recreational zones for physical fitness and relaxation.
• Student-Centric Spaces: The Division of Student Welfare (DSW), overseeing numerous student clubs for various interests.
• Placement Support: Dedicated placement cells for each school to help students become industry-ready.

The vibrant and well-connected campus provides an environment that encourages holistic development for students.

First-Year Experience

The first year was an exciting yet challenging phase as I adjusted to a new environment and navigated the sprawling campus. Initially, finding classrooms was difficult, but it gave me the chance to explore the beautiful university grounds.

A significant highlight of my first year was joining Coding Pirates, a student club that became a turning point for me. Through the club, I:

• Enhanced my coding knowledge.
• Improved my public speaking skills.
• Gained confidence through participation in events.

Classes were scheduled for just four days a week, allowing ample time for self-study and extracurricular activities. The professors were approachable and supportive, ensuring a smooth transition into college life. My first year laid a strong foundation for both academic and personal development.

Second and Third-Year Experience

As I progressed into the second and third years, the focus shifted towards placement preparation and skill development.

• I registered for the Training and Placement Cell (TPC) under the Career Services Policies, with a one-time fee of ₹3000.
• Hackathons were organized throughout the year, providing opportunities to showcase skills and collaborate on innovative solutions.
• Summer Training Classes conducted by the TPC equipped us with:
  • Coding skills
  • Soft skills
  • Aptitude and analytical abilities
  • Verbal communication skills

By the third year, companies began visiting the campus, intensifying the competition for placements. Many students secured internships that transitioned into industrial co-op programs, while others focused on specialized coursework.

I opted for a specialization in Data Science, gaining in-depth knowledge of this booming field. Alongside, I pursued IoT (Internet of Things) as an elective minor, where we explored topics like microprocessors and microcontrollers. These experiences expanded my technical skillset and prepared me for real-world industry challenges.

Overall Experience

LPU has been instrumental in shaping my journey through:

• Global Exposure: Opportunities to learn and collaborate on an international level.
• Dedicated Faculty: Supportive professors who guided me throughout.
• Excellent Facilities: Modern infrastructure conducive to both academic and personal growth.

However, there is scope for improvement in the placement process, particularly in verifying the authenticity of some visiting companies.

Despite the challenges, my time at LPU has been truly memorable. I made lifelong friends, built strong connections with faculty members, and grew as an individual ready to step into the professional world.
