IIT- JEE Exam Experience | How I Prepared for JEE

Last Updated : 9 Dec, 2024

It all began in Class 9, when I secured first rank in the Science Olympiad. The gold medal bore the words "Techfest by IITB," which sparked my curiosity. Upon researching, I discovered the prestige of IITs—their reputation, lucrative placements, vibrant fests, and dynamic hostel life. That was the moment I decided: I would get into IIT. Here's how my journey unfolded.

Starting the Journey

My preparation began in Class 11, during the COVID-19 pandemic. I enrolled in coaching classes, which transitioned online. The time saved from commuting to coaching was redirected to focused study sessions, allowing me to make the most of every moment.

My Preparation Strategy

1. Studying: The Core Approach

There’s no secret formula to cracking JEE—it’s all about determination and discipline. My strategy was simple:

  • Complete homework and practice sheets regularly.
  • Revise topics thoroughly and consistently.

2. Clearing Doubts

Never hesitate to ask questions, no matter how small or silly they may seem. Unresolved doubts can accumulate and hinder concept clarity. I made it a point to ask every question to my mentors, ensuring my concepts stayed clear and my understanding strong.

3. Planning Ahead

Every night, I planned my next day’s study schedule. This saved time and provided direction, eliminating the confusion of where to begin. This habit became a key factor in my preparation success.

4. Regular Evaluation

  • I took tests regularly, even when I wasn’t fully prepared.
  • This helped me build the stamina to sit through 3-6 hour-long exams.
  • Testing frequently also revealed weak areas, guiding my improvement efforts.

5. Improvement Through Retests

After each test, I analyzed my performance and retook the test independently to identify and fix weaknesses.

  • Managing time across sections—Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry—was crucial.
  • I experimented with various sequences (starting with Chemistry, followed by Physics and Mathematics) to find the strategy that worked best for me.

Staying Healthy

1. Avoiding Sick Days

Taking frequent breaks or falling sick can disrupt your momentum. I ensured that both my physical and mental health were in good shape to stay productive.

2. Sleep

Overstudying can be counterproductive. I prioritized proper sleep—6-7 hours at night and a 1-hour nap during the day. Rested minds retain information better and perform efficiently.

The Takeaway

  • Determination and Discipline are the cornerstones of success.
  • Keep concepts clear, maintain consistency, and stay healthy.
  • Never skip on planning, self-evaluation, or proper rest.

This journey wasn’t easy, but it was worth every effort. With the right mindset and habits, success is achievable. That’s all I have—good luck to everyone chasing their dreams!
