When I decided to take the JEE Mains exam in 2023, my goal wasn’t IIT, or NIT but admission to a decent college with affordable fees, where I could fuel my passion for technology through a B.Tech degree. Here’s my journey, the hurdles I faced, the resources that helped me, and the key takeaways I hope will help future aspirants prepare effectively.
My keen interest in technology motivated me to pursue a B.Tech, and so I set my sights on JEE Mains. I decided to take a drop year, as I hadn’t attempted the exam during my 12th-grade year due to limited guidance. For my preparation, I enrolled in PhysicsWallah's Droppers Course. It’s a paid course but very effective if you stick with it. I started off with enthusiasm, but as the course progressed, I found myself overwhelmed, and backlogs started piling up. Here’s what I learned along the way and the resources I used to regain my momentum:
Online Courses and Resources: While PhysicsWallah’s course covers everything, I also turned to other resources that kept me motivated, especially when catching up on backlogged topics. Here’s what helped:
Maths: The "Neha Aggrawal Mathematically Inclined" channel was a gem.
Physics: I found "Eduniti- Physics by Mohit Goenka_IITKGP" videos very helpful for covering basic to critical concepts.
Chemistry: For a quick review, I relied on the one-shot videos from JEE Wallah, and did plenty of practice questions (PYQs).
Books and Basics: Revisiting the 11th and 12th-grade textbooks was beneficial for grounding myself in the basics, especially in areas I struggled with.
As exam day approached, I could feel the pressure mounting. Despite months of preparation, the anxiety was real, and I barely slept the night before. Every thought about the exam seemed to amplify my nervousness, and by morning, I felt both excited and apprehensive. Arriving at the exam center early helped me settle down a bit, but the anticipation was still intense.
Once I completed the check-in process, I found myself in the exam hall. Sitting there, I realized that all my months of hard work had come down to this moment. When the exam started, I decided to begin with my strongest subject, Physics, hoping that a solid start would build my confidence. Physics turned out to be moderately challenging but manageable. Solving familiar types of questions gave me a sense of relief, and I was able to complete this section without too much trouble.
Next up was Maths, and this section was more intense. Some questions were quite complex, testing my grasp on a few topics where I knew I hadn’t prepared as thoroughly. The pressure started building again, and I had to remind myself to stay focused and not dwell on the tough questions for too long. Watching the timer tick down was both a blessing and a curse; while it kept me moving, it also reminded me of the limited time I had left.
Finally, I tackled Chemistry, which was a mix of both familiar and unexpectedly tough questions. I’d prepared for Chemistry with a lot of one-shot revision videos, but in the moment, I realized that a deeper understanding of certain concepts would have helped. By the end of the test, I felt both relief and uncertainty—relief that it was over and uncertainty about whether my efforts would be enough.
Overall, the day was a rollercoaster of emotions, from nervousness to moments of confidence, and finally to a sense of accomplishment for just completing the exam.
In the end, I scored 85%. It wasn’t the highest, and I was initially disappointed. However, I did achieve my goal of securing a seat in a government college, which met my primary objective. Looking back, I realized that consistent effort would have greatly improved my score. Reflecting on the experience, I realized that consistency is truly key. It’s easy to be motivated at the start, but staying consistent is what ultimately determines success in exams like JEE Mains. I also learned the importance of revising regularly, practicing under timed conditions, and truly understanding concepts rather than just memorizing solutions. My experience taught me that while achieving a high score is important, knowing that you gave your best effort can be just as fulfilling. This experience taught me some important lessons that I’d like to share with others who are preparing for JEE Mains or similar competitive exams.
Here’s what worked, what didn’t, and what I’d recommend for future test-takers:
Preparing for JEE Mains is a challenging journey, but with the right resources, consistency, and a balanced approach, it’s achievable. I hope my experience can serve as a guide and reminder to stay focused, practice consistently, and maintain a positive outlook. Remember, every effort counts, so do your best—you’ll thank yourself later!
