JEE Mains Mathematics Preparation Experience

Last Updated : 18 Jun, 2024

In the JEE Examination, the percentile calculation gives the highest priority to Mathematics, followed by Physics, and then Chemistry. Thus, it became crucial for me to focus more on Mathematics. Initially, while preparing for a few topics in 11th and 12th-grade Mathematics, I was able to understand and solve problems. However, I faced challenges with my problem-solving capabilities and the timing required for solving each problem.

Rather than blindly following my institute's strategies and methodologies, I conducted extensive research on how to effectively approach and solve mathematics problems. By employing this approach, I improved my speed and developed a methodology for tackling problems in multiple ways.

After extensive research, I discovered Neha Agarwal's YouTube channel, "Mathematically Inclined." She simplifies complex topics and problems with an easy-to-understand approach, which helped me gain confidence in understanding and solving mathematics problems. She provided a step-by-step roadmap for cracking JEE Mains, structured in four laps.

Lap 1: Low Input -> High Output

In this lap, the chapters covered are:

  • Sequence and Series
  • Matrices and Determinants
  • Vectors and 3D Geometry
  • Quadratic Equations
  • Complex Numbers
  • Binomial Theorem
  • Statistics

Among these chapters, Vectors and 3D Geometry hold the highest priority with a weightage of 3 marks, followed by Matrices and Determinants with 2 marks. Sequence and Series, and Binomial Theorem cover a weightage of 1 or 2 marks, while the remaining chapters cover 1 mark each.

Lap 2: Medium Input -> High Output

This lap includes:

  • Limits, Continuity, and Derivatives
  • Differential Equations
  • Area Under the Curve
  • Integration (Indefinite + Definite)

Here, Limits, Continuity, and Derivatives have the highest priority with a weightage of 2 marks, followed by Integration, which has a weightage of either 1 or 2 marks. The other chapters cover 1 mark each.

Lap 3: High Input -> High Output

The chapters included are:

  • Permutations and Combinations
  • Probability
  • Sets, Relations, and Functions
  • Applications of Derivatives

In this lap, Sets, Relations, and Functions have the highest priority with a weightage of 2 marks, followed by Permutations and Combinations with a weightage of either 1 or 2 marks. The remaining chapters cover 1 mark each.

Final Lap

The final lap covers:

  • Coordinate Geometry: Straight Lines, Circles, Conic Sections.
  • Trigonometry: Trigonometric Functions and Inverse Trigonometry.

Among these, Conic Sections hold the highest priority with a weightage of either 1 or 2 marks, while the other chapters cover 1 mark each.

Neha Agarwal simplified the mathematics topics and proposed a method to approach and focus based on the priority of the chapters, using the structure of previous years' JEE Mains Mathematics papers. She also provided tips and tricks, formula cheat sheets, a strategy, a daily planner, and previous years' questions, solving all problems in the simplest way possible.

In 2020, my first two attempts at the JEE Main Mathematics paper did not go well. However, I continuously followed Neha Agarwal's methodology and strategies, solving many previous years' questions and improving my problem-solving speed over time. In the third attempt, which was delayed due to COVID-19, I achieved a 94 percentile overall, with a 90 percentile contribution from Mathematics.
