Difference between LTE and VoLTE

Last Updated : 15 Jul, 2025

In the case of mobile networks, you may have come across acronyms like LTE or VoLTE at some point. Both are associated with the connectivity of your phone to the network and the way you receive and make calls, yet they both are distinct components of Android. It is equally important to understand the difference between LTE and VoLTE so that you can get the most out of your mobile experience, where you can expect better voice quality, higher data speed, and improved performance.

What is LTE?

LTE also known as Long Term Evolution is a specification for the wireless transmission of information. It is sold under the brand name 4G LTE and has been described as being a lot better than the earlier 3G networks. LTE primarily centers of offering broadband wireless mobile internet access.

LTE is a standard for high-speed cellular data communication systems. It provides a download speed of about 100 Mbps and an upload speed of about 50 Mbps. It does not provide good-quality voice calls while using the data services.

👁 LTE

Advantages of LTE

  • Faster Data Speeds: LTE that stands for long term evolution has better data download and upload speeds than the previous generations such as 3G.
  • Wide Coverage: LTE networks are popular, and they a have extensive reach in both the urban and the rural areas.
  • Lower Latency: LTE therefore lends it to applications that require low latency, for instance, gaming and video calling.

Disadvantages of LTE

  • No Native Voice Support: LTE on its own cannot support voice calls directly; it only supports them if it has to fall back to the current 2/3 G networks.
  • Battery Consumption: the longer the time in which one uses the high-speed data connectivity, the shorter the battery life.

What is VoLTE?

VoLTE or Voice over LTE is an advanced technology in which the LTE connection of a cellular network is used to support voice communications. It is important to understand that while VoLTE can be considered as a kind of voice service, it is notably different from traditional voice services which are based on 2G/3G networks and capable of offering high quality voice calls on the top of which data connections are also possible thanks to the usage of the LTE.

VoLTE is a much-standardized system to make high-definition voice calls. It allows the users to make voice calls while using the data services without changing the quality of the voice.

👁 VoLTE
Advantages of VoLTE

  • Better Voice Quality: VoLTE provides better voice quality and CD (Circuit Switched voice) clarity in comparison to normal Voice call.
  • Simultaneous Voice and Data: This is because with VoLTE it is possible to make a call while at the same time browsing the internet or using data heavy applications.
  • Faster Call Setup: Calls establish fast with VoLTE because the network is more enhanced.

Disadvantages of VoLTE

  • Device Compatibility:VoLTE is not available in all the devices, thus you may have to use a suitable smartphone.
  • Network Support: VoLTE also has some limitations in this sense as it needs some special network support and therefore could not be offered everywhere.

Difference Between LTE and VoLTE

LTEVoLTE
It is a data communication system. It is also a data communication system to overcome LTE.
It is a type of network. It is the services offered on the network.
It may or may not support data and voice call services at the same time.It always supports data and voice call services at the same time.
In case it supports data and voice call together the quality of voice calling is not good. While it supports HD quality voice calling while using data services.
It turns off the data connection while making voice calls. It does not turn off the data connection while making voice calls.
Call connection between two users is slower (almost takes 7 seconds). If both users are on VoLTE, the call connection is faster.
External applications like Skype or WhatsApp are required to make video calls. No external applications are required to make video calls.
It is not widely used by users nowadays. It is more widely used nowadays.
It simply aims to increase data rates using 4G bandwidth. It targets voice calling as well as internet traffic without interfering with either.
It gives comparatively less than VoLTE. It stands out over LTE in voice call quality, HD video calls, battery life, call setup time, and others.
This cellular network variety is speedier than 4G.It is the calls made over the LTE Network

Conclusion

In conclusion, LTE aims at high data speeds while VoLTE as the name suggests is developed over LTE through which voice calls can be made over the same network. Enumerated below are the benefits that can be obtained if the device is compatible or if the carrier supports the VoLTE. Using VoLTE can improve the calling experience with improved voice quality and faster call connection while simultaneously not consuming data.
