What is the Minimum IELTS Score to get Canada PR in 2024?

Last Updated : 6 Aug, 2025

To successfully apply for Canada PR in 2024, achieving the minimum IELTS score is a crucial step, especially for those applying through the Express Entry system. The minimum required IELTS score generally aligns with CLB 7, which corresponds to a score of 6.0 in each section of the IELTS—Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. This score is the basic eligibility threshold for the Federal Skilled Worker Program.

However, aiming for a higher score, such as CLB 9 or above, can significantly boost your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points. A higher CRS score not only strengthens your eligibility but also increases your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residency. With the 2024 immigration process becoming more competitive, scoring well on your IELTS exam is essential to improving your chances in the Canada Express Entry pool and securing your PR status.

Requirements for a Minimum IELTS Score

In Canada, there are three methods to become a permanent resident:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Canadian Experience Class

You must confirm the validity of your IELTS test results for the entire six-month duration required by the IRCC to handle your application. To be eligible for permanent residency through Express Entry, a candidate must receive a minimum CLB 7 score for language proficiency or an overall IELTS score of 6.0.

Each program has different criteria for language proficiency. Your language skills are assessed in four subcategories: speaking, writing, reading, and listening. The distribution of your scores is based on your CLB Level (Canadian Language Benchmark).

Regarding individuals for whom English is their mother tongue:

Should your CLB be four or less, you will not be awarded any points. If your CLB score is 10 or higher, you will receive the maximum number of points, which is 34 or 32 (if you are married).

IELTS General or Academic for Canada PR

The well-known English language competency exam known as IELTS is given to candidates who want to immigrate, work, or study abroad. It is one of the four language exams that the Canadian government accepts for immigration-related purposes.

If one is asking for permanent residence in any other country—especially Canada—they must take the IELTS exam. The IELTS general exam is required for Canadian permanent residents, whereas the IELTS academic is designed for individuals who want to study in Canada. Only in the event that the applicant wishes to apply for a student visa is the Academic IELTS admissible. For Canada PR, your overall IELTS score is crucial.

Canada has established a scoring system for the several language examinations, and it recognizes four of them for immigration purposes. Every test result is assigned a CLB, which goes from 1 to 10.

The Express Entry immigration selection system is in charge of processing applications for the majority of Canada's federal economic immigration initiatives.

The immigrants who had applied through express entry had to demonstrate their proficiency in either French or English in order to be allowed into the pool. Every point counts in the Express Entry field as contenders for the coveted invitation to apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

if you are unable to take the CELPIP English test and lack proficiency in French. In such instance, accessing the pool requires passing the IELTS exam. You must take the IELTS general training exam to be eligible for express entrance.
