Akamai Technologies Interview Experience | SDET Summer Intern

Last Updated : 11 Nov, 2024

The interview process for the SDET intern role at Akamai Technologies consisted of four rounds, all conducted virtually:

  1. HackerRank Assessment
  2. Technical Interview
  3. Managerial Interview
  4. HR Interview

Round 1: HackerRank Assessment

The initial assessment on HackerRank began one hour after the pre-placement talk, covering a medium-level SQL query and multiple-choice questions based on computer science fundamentals like Operating Systems, Algorithms, Linux, and Hashing. The assessment duration was 90 minutes, which allowed ample time to complete most questions. I managed to finish in 30 minutes and used the remaining time to review my answers. Results were released two days later, with 18 candidates shortlisted, including myself.

Round 2: Technical Interview

The technical interview began with a brief introduction, followed by questions about my projects: Music Recommendation App, QR-Code Generator, and Weather Application.

  • Music Recommendation App: The interviewer asked about the project’s purpose, tech stack, and backend design, which I developed independently. We discussed scalability, specifically on automating song additions to the database, and recommendations, for which I suggested using APIs (like Spotify) for dynamic trends. I also proposed implementing a machine learning algorithm for recommendations, explaining my decision to use a database due to limited AI/ML experience.
  • QR-Code Generator: This project, utilizing NPM packages to convert URLs into QR codes, was straightforward, and we discussed its implementation briefly.
  • Subject Knowledge: I was asked about my current subjects—Computer Networks, Operating Systems, and Data Science. Questions included RAM’s function, SQL basics (primary keys, joins), and a terminal task to display system information using Linux commands. Additionally, I debugged and explained a Python file, fixing syntax and indentation errors, which showcased my troubleshooting skills.

The interviewer, Puneet Sharma, was very supportive, creating a comfortable environment to discuss these projects and technical tasks.

Round 3: Managerial Interview

After 48 hours, I was invited to the managerial interview, conducted by James Park, a senior manager with extensive experience at Akamai. He began by sharing his career experiences, emphasizing the importance of group projects.

  • Teamwork & Projects: We discussed my involvement in university communities and the Music Recommendation App as a team project, where I explained my backend contributions. He appreciated the relevance of my coursework, including Computer Networks and Operating Systems, particularly the networking fundamentals crucial for Akamai’s field.
  • Learning Experience: I asked about the internship’s scope and his experiences at Akamai. He shared how interns' work remains impactful and ongoing within the company. His candid insights into Akamai’s culture made this round insightful.

Round 4: HR Interview

This brief, 10-minute interview began with an informal conversation about my hometown, Jammu. The HR representative shared her experiences visiting Jammu, creating a relaxed atmosphere. We discussed challenges faced by startups in Bangalore and factors that contribute to their long-term success. I also inquired about the internship’s project scope, remote setup, and potential for full-time conversion.

Final Outcome

Three candidates, including myself, were selected for the internship. This experience was incredibly rewarding, especially with the supportive and insightful interactions throughout each round.
