Interview Rounds
Technical Interview — Round 1
Interviewers: Two interviewers were present.
Questions:
- Introduction: The interview began with the classic prompt, “Tell me about yourself.”
- OOP Concepts: Basic principles of Object-Oriented Programming were covered.
- Puzzle: I was asked to solve the classic “two-beaker” puzzle, which focuses on measuring a specific amount of water.
- SQL Query:
- I was initially asked to find the second-highest salary using
LIMIT and OFFSET. - The interviewers then challenged me to provide an alternative solution without using
LIMIT. I wrote a subquery, which had a higher time complexity, and later explained the optimal subquery version.
- Project-Based Questions:
- There was a detailed discussion on one of my projects, covering the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), including tools, deployment processes, and CI/CD practices.
- Cloud Knowledge: The interviewers inquired about my familiarity with cloud technologies.
- Other Technical Questions:
- SQL: Asked to find the 3rd highest salary by joining two tables based on account ID.
- Systems Design: I explained how Google Search works internally.
- Unlisted Skills: Discussed technical skills I had acquired outside of my resume.
- Team Project Contributions: I elaborated on my role and experience with project documentation.
Takeaway: Knowledge of Computer Networks and Cloud technologies is beneficial for technical rounds at Avaya, even at a high level.
HR + Technical Interview — Round 2
Questions:
- Introduction: The interviewer started with “Tell me about yourself.”
- Background: Questions about my family background, involvement in college clubs, technical societies, and leadership roles were asked.
- Academic Performance:
- My academic record was reviewed, noting fluctuations: above 90% in 10th grade, below 90% in 12th grade, and above 9 CGPA in college.
- I explained this variation, particularly emphasizing my focus on entrance exam preparation during 12th grade.
- The interviewers also asked about my JEE Mains and CET percentiles and ranks.
- Situational Question:
- I was asked, “When you walk on stairs, do you take one step at a time or more than one?”
- I explained that it depends on time availability, generally taking one step at a time.
- The interviewer then asked, “Are you good at time management?” which led to a discussion about my time management skills.
Verdict
Outcome: I was offered the position; however, due to a change in the company’s financial situation, Avaya revoked the offer after two months.
