Nutanix came to the Techno India Group , Kolkata to hire interns for the SRE role. Out of about 400 total shortlisted students from the MCQ round, 70 were selected for interview rounds. 7 were selected for HR rounds and out of those 7, 5 were selected . I am one of the 5 students offered this role and i hope that this article can provide some more data about how the hiring process works for Nutanix SRE Role.
As mentioned in other interview experiences this was a strictly non-development role. SRE and development fall on almost opposite ends of the IT spectrum and any developer specific skills caused major questions to arise later in the managerial rounds, if the individual got through that round.
Topics are the same as listed in the other interview experience.
The first round was the online MCQ questions round, with 50 questions to be answered in 70 minutes. it consisted of basic questions of the topics listed above. 10 questions each from networking, OS, Linux, hardware and 5 questions each from Cloud Computing and Virtualization.
(note this is in addition to the topics mentioned in the other interview experience. )
This round was a basic round to check your skills on each of these domains. how proficient you are in each of these and the limits of your knowledge base. Depending on your knowledge you can get basic to advanced questions. Once you cannot answer any in depth questions anymore then the interviewer will switch to another topic and start this process again.
Tips: Make sure you know one technology very well and have extensive knowledge and experience in that. Mine was Linux, can be anything only related to the required skills.
This round is a Version 2 of the first round. on every topic there are going to be more advanced questions, more in depth troubleshooting questions. Questions arise from the topics which were not covered in Technical Round 1.
Examples of questions :
I went through all the regular steps of DNS cache flushing and renewing the cache. however this problem was not resolved. You can probe the interviewer about how this situation arose and what they were doing before this problem occured.
The interviewer (posing as a client ) had run some system security patches after which this occured.
The answer after a lot of questions back and forth was that the security patched had changed the /etc/hosts file explicitly to point nutanix.com to a wrong IP address. Resetting the change fixed this issue.
These kind of questions are common , questions change drastically depending on your skillset and expertise.
The last and most important round in my opinion is the HR round. I was asked questions almost all from my resume, also some standard questions were asked ( why SRE and not SDE ), some situation based questions, opinions on how to handle enterprise customers, team management, etc.
All the best to all the people who are preparing for this interview. I wish you all the best.
Nutanix is the first company i interviewed for and got selected. The entire process was very smooth and as open as can be.. This has been a very rewarding experience.
