Mastercard Work Experience As A SDE Intern

Last Updated : 28 May, 2024

I had the opportunity to intern as a Software Developer at Mastercard during our on-campus recruitment drive. The selection process consisted of three rounds of interviews of easy-to-medium difficulty. Out of all the candidates, seven students, including myself, were selected for this internship.

Pre-Internship Phase

A month or two before joining, we were allocated our work locations; I was assigned to the Pune office. About ten days prior to our start date, we were introduced to our mentors, referred to as "buddies," and our managers. During this period, we also completed formalities such as background verification and other necessary documentation.

First Day at Mastercard

My first day, May 22, 2023, marked the beginning of my corporate journey. Entering the expansive Pune campus and seeing the senior engineers was quite impressive. The day began with an induction program where we learned about the company's culture and operations. This was followed by a welcome lunch at the office cafeteria, providing a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow interns and colleagues through engaging activities.

Transition to Corporate Environment

During the induction, we received our office assets, including laptops, headphones, and other essentials. Adapting to Mastercard's culture, where everyone is addressed by their first name, was a significant shift from my college experience.

Work Environment and Responsibilities

As we have hybrid work model at Mastercard so, we met our managers and buddies virtually on the very first day. The primary technologies used at Mastercard include Java, Spring Boot, Angular, and React, depending on the team. My responsibilities included:

  • Designing and Developing Software: Crafting software solutions based on specific project requirements and ensuring they meet the highest standards.
  • Code Reviews and Debugging: Participating in peer code reviews, debugging issues, and ensuring code quality and performance optimization.
  • Coordinating with Teams: Collaborating with my buddy and manager for updates, feedback, and necessary changes to the project.
  • Participating in Agile Practices: Attending daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives to ensure smooth progress and timely delivery of tasks.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintaining clear and comprehensive documentation of the development process, project progress, and technical specifications.
  • Testing and Quality Assurance: Developing and executing test plans to ensure the robustness and reliability of the software.
  • Innovation and Problem-Solving: Engaging in brainstorming sessions to contribute innovative ideas and solutions for complex problems.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Attending knowledge sharing sessions conducted by managers and senior developers, and contributing to internal knowledge bases.

The positive work environment at Mastercard is conducive to productivity. The office amenities, including a well-stocked cafeteria, gym, healthcare support, and game rooms, help employees maintain a balanced work-life experience.

Learning and Growth

Initially, I was given ample time to learn and adapt to new technologies. The support from managers and colleagues was exceptional, with assistance readily available even outside of office hours. The approachability of senior leaders, including vice presidents and directors, added to the welcoming environment.

Team Activities and Pune Experience

The pleasant weather of Pune during the monsoon season added to the enjoyable experience. Team activities such as night cricket tournaments, quarterly outings, and frequent team lunches or dinners helped to foster a better team relationships.

Conclusion and Post-Internship Evaluation

My internship concluded with an evaluation where I presented my work to the managers and directors of my team. For my dedication and performance, I was offered a Pre-Placement Offer (PPO), which I am delighted to accept.

Overall, my two-month internship at Mastercard was a valuable and enriching experience. I am grateful for the opportunity and excited to continue my journey with Mastercard. Thank you for taking the time to read about my experience.
