When I was 18, I dreamed of working from anywhere I wanted while earning a consistent income. My love for computers started with playing games, but my curiosity about how games and websites worked pushed me toward a career in technology. Although I didn’t get into my desired engineering college, I chose to pursue a BBA-CA (BCA equivalent) program. As I delved into the world of coding and technology during my studies, my interest grew stronger, and I decided to build a career in IT.
Then came COVID-19, which disrupted many plans but also introduced the concept of remote work. I saw friends, even those without a computer science background, securing work-from-home jobs. This motivated me to explore freelancing and remote opportunitie In 2022, I graduated and began searching for jobs. However, I soon realized that my knowledge wasn’t enough to clear technical interviews. That’s when I decided to upskill. I took courses in web development, where I dove deep into DSA, Spring Boot, React, Java, and JavaFX.
While working part-time in a CA office as a side hustle, I handled accounting tasks in Tally. During this time, I noticed that small businesses often struggled with accounting software like Tally. These tools either had unnecessary features or were too complex for their needs, yet they came with a hefty price tag This observation gave me an idea: create an accounting software tailored for small businesses—simple, user-friendly, and efficient. I discussed this idea with one of the clients I was working with, listening carefully to their challenges. Based on their input, I started developing a solution: The software would allow users to print invoices, manage inventory, and track sales, purchases, and bank transactions. It included features to calculate taxes separately (e.g., 5%, 12%), making GST return filing easier for the client.
With guidance from mentors and seniors, I began developing the software for this client. The process wasn’t easy—it required patience, discipline, and juggling my office schedule alongside the project. Over the course of 3-4 months, I dedicated myself to solving their problems, ensuring every feature was tailored to their needs.Despite not knowing if similar software already existed, I approached the project with confidence and determination. The client appreciated the final product, which gave me immense satisfaction. It wasn’t just about creating software; it was about solving someone’s real-world problem.
Completing my first freelancing project was a transformative experience. It taught me several lessons: The importance of listening to clients and understanding their needs. The value of discipline and time management. The confidence to approach challenges with a solution-oriented mindset. This project not only gave me the confidence to tackle bigger challenges but also led to another client soon after. It marked the beginning of my freelancing journey and reaffirmed my passion for solving problems through technology.
Looking back, my first freelancing project was more than just a professional milestone—it was a personal achievement. It showed me that with dedication and persistence, I could turn ideas into impactful solutions. To anyone considering freelancing: take the first step, listen to your clients, and believe in your ability to make a difference. Every challenge you face is an opportunity to grow and succeed.
