Error description

• Error Message: j9vm.228 * ** ASSERTION FAILED ** at
  ./VMAccess.cpp:290: (0 == ((vmThread)->publicFlags &
  J9_PUBLIC_FLAGS_VM_ACCESS))
  Message is reported in stderr.

  Stack Trace: N/A
  .
  The issue only happens in a constrained memory environment.
  

Local fix

• This issue can be potentially alleviated by reducing the amount
  of memory used by the JVM heap by specifying a smaller value for
  -Xmx JVM heap option, or by reducing the number of JIT
  compilation threads by specifying the -XcompilationThreads1
  option on the command line. Note that either of these potential
  workarounds may have an affect on startup and throughput of the
  application.
  

Problem summary

• The problem is caused by the JIT compiler not properly cleaning
  up VM access when a JIT compilation fails due to an out of
  memory situation.
  

Problem conclusion

• The JIT has been updated to prevent the assertion or crash from
  happening.
