IV74636: JAVA 7.1/8.0 JIT PPC: POSSIBLE BAD ARRAY TRANSLATE FROM 16 TO 8 BIT CHARACTERS WHEN NON-LATIN CHARACTERS ARE PRESENT

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• Error Message: In Java 7.1 and Java 8.0 on Power platforms (AIX,
  Linux). Possible bad array translate of 16bit to 8bit characters
  when non-standard Latin characters are present (i.e. ﾄ)
  .
  Stack Trace: N/A
  .
  The problem is only present on Java 7.1 and Java 8.0 and only on
  Power platforms (AIX, LinuxPPC, LinuxPPC little-endian).
  

Local fix

• The problem can be avoided by disabling one optimization in the
  JIT compiler.
  -Xjit:disableIdiomRecognition
  This option might have a noticeable effect on performance but a
  typical system would see only 1-2% performance loss. A more
  pronounced effect is possible in rare cases.
  

Problem summary

• The JIT could fail to translate 16bit Latin characters just
  prior to non-standard Latin characters when converting to 8bit
  characters.
  

Problem conclusion

• The JIT was modified to correct this issue.
