Error description

• Error Message: Under rare circumstances a
  java.lang.NumberFormatException is thrown when deserializing a
  numeric string that was previously serialized using
  String.getBytes() with the encoding set to UTF16 on in Java 8
  SR2 on POWER8 Little Endian machines only. This problem does
  not effect Java on AIX, the problem can only occur on little
  endian LinuxPPC running on POWER8 CPUs.

Local fix

• The issue can be worked around by disabling the UTF16 to byte
  SIMD converters:
  -Xjit:disableSIMDUTF16BEEncoder,disableSIMDUTF16LEEncoder.
  

Problem summary

• The problem is caused when the SIMD UTF16 to byte encoder
  introduced in Java 8 SR2 is used to convert a string to bytes on
  a Little Endian PowerPC 8 system. Bad data is produced in rare
  circumstances, leading to a variety of potential exceptions when
  the data is subsequently used. The problem appears in both 32/64
  bit SDKs and both default and compressed refs.
  

Problem conclusion

• The defect has been corrected.
