VOOZH | about |
These 3-to-6-month hybrid, tuition-free and highly participatory programs invite journalists and executives to explore generative AI through theory and practice, and add meaningfully to the conversation.
The AI Journalism Labs were developed by J+ at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, with support from Microsoft, to empower journalists and media professionals to navigate and harness generative AI in ethical ways that reinforce trust from communities and increase impact.
We believe that journalists and managers should have a direct understanding of AI through experimentation to be able to think strategically about its applications to their work.
In that spirit, the AI J Labs adopt a seminar-and-lab model, alternating classes between lectures by AI visionaries and hands-on sessions by seasoned practitioners, many opportunities for meaningful conversations, and a final project overseen by a coach.
There have been five past cohorts: AI Journalism Lab Pilot (2024); AI Journalism Lab: Leadership (2025); AI Journalism Lab: Adoption (2025); AI J Lab: Leaders (2026) and AI J Lab: Builders (2026), in partnership with Nordic AI Journalism network.

For the AI J Lab: Builders, we are partnering with Nordic AI in Journalism network (NAIJ), the trailblazers in global AI journalism. Nordic AI Journalism network (2020) is a cross-border industry network for collaborative exploration of artificial intelligence in journalism. The network brings together media professionals, innovators, and researchers from across the Nordic region to share knowledge, exchange case studies, and address shared strategic challenges. Its mission is to foster responsible use and development of AI in journalism, ultimately delivering more relevant and trustworthy services to audiences.
Since 2023, Nordic AI Journalism network has held the annual Nordic AI in Media Summit (NAMS) in Copenhagen, a key forum for global dialogue on AIโs role in the news industry. The network is led by Agnes Stenbom (Schibsted / Tinius Trust), Olle Zachrison (BBC News), Kasper Lindskow (JP/Politikens Media Group) and Sara Inkeri Vardar (JP/Politikens Media Group).

There are two labs. The AI Journalism Lab: Leaders will run from Jan 14 to April 24, 2026. The AI Journalism Lab: Builders will run from Jan 29 to May 29, 2026.
Participants must commit to coming to New York for a two-day, in person kick-off on Jan 22-23 (AI J Lab: Leaders) or Feb 6-7 (AI J Lab: Builders.)
Participants are expected to participate in 2-hour online sessions mostly on Wednesdays (AI J Lab: Leaders) or Thursdays (AI J Lab: Builders) at 11 am ET and reserve additional time for independent research and experiments, coaching sessions and peer circles. Participants are expected to work on their final projects throughout the program to present to the cohort during their last classes.
We have found that the best way to learn new techniques and explore skills is to apply them immediately to a real-life challenge. In that spirit, participants will be asked to identify a generative topic of interest, related to journalism, to work on throughout the program, with the help of peers and coaches. Examples include plans to deploy AI in their newsrooms, strategies and protocols around the use of AI in journalism, product ideas using AI and more.
Participants will briefly present their work to the class at the end of the program.
If you are a leader, manager, executive or strategist working on the editorial, tech, product or business side of your media organization, mid-career journalist or news technologist in a management position or a news executive please consider applying for the AI Journalism Lab: Leadership.
If you are working in audience, tech and product roles in a newsroom, a strategist, or a developer, please consider applying for the AI Journalism Lab: Builders.
In addition, if you are a member of Nordic AI Journalism, please indicate so in your applications as we have reserved several spots for that community, as part of our partnership.
Each lab has space for about 20 participants who are passionate about driving change and sustainability in service to their audience, whether they work in legacy news operations or digital start-ups, for-profit or non-profit, covering general news or niche interests. We encourage journalists and leaders from diverse backgrounds and experience to apply to this inclusive program. Please contact us if you want to discuss whether this program is a fit for you!
You do not need to have any in-depth prior experience with AI to do this program. But we will select applicants who have a facility with technology, a track record of innovation and a stated curiosity about AI.
Yes. Part of the mission of this program is to bring together a diverse cohort of media leaders that can benefit from each otherโs experience. However, you must be able to travel to the United States as part of the kick off for either lab.
Classes and coaching sessions will be led by a diverse and experienced group of media and AI innovators who understand technology from a journalism perspective, including Anita Zielina, CEO of Better Leaders Lab and members of Nordic AI Journalism. Classes will alternate between lectures by AI visionaries and hands-on sessions by seasoned practitioners, with many opportunities from meaningful discussions.
Thanks to the support of Microsoft Journalism, the program is tuition-free if you are selected.
Yes, we will offer a flat travel stipend to help participants make the trip to the kick-off sessions in New York, if needed. This in-person session is mandatory for program participants.
Participants will not only forge lasting professional bonds with their cohorts, coaches and instructors but also join the vast and active network of alumni from the greater Newmark J-School community.
