Delbert Mann was an American film and television director best known for directing "Marty" (1955), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Director. The film was adapted from the 1953 teleplay of the same name which Mann had also directed. He was also president of the Directors Guild of America from 1967 to 1971. Mann is credited with "helping to bring TV techniques to the film world". He also served in the United States Army Air Corps as a B-24 bomber pilot and then as an intelligence officer with the 8th Air Force during World War II.
