His repertoire can be best described as a mix of acoustic-tinged pop, rock and folk. After recording on the independent American label Custard Records, Blunt won two BRIT Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards, and by 2006 was nominated for five Grammy Awards. The following year, he released his second album All the Lost Souls (2007). Blunt's third studio album, Some Kind of Trouble, was released in November 2010. Worldwide, Blunt has sold over 15 million albums.

Blunt was an officer in the Life Guards, a Cavalry regiment of the British Army, and served under NATO in Kosovo during the conflict there in 1999. While posted to Kosovo, Blunt was introduced to the work of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF or "Doctors Without Borders"). Since then, Blunt has supported MSF by holding meet-and-greet auctions at many of his concerts.

As of 4 October 2009 Blunt's primary residence is on the Spanish island of Ibiza.

Back to Bedlam is the debut studio album by English singer-songwriter James Blunt. The album was released on 1 November 2004 through Atlantic Records. The album was a major commercial success, topping the albums charts of over ten countries, as well as reaching number two in the United States and three other countries. Back to Bedlam sold 12 million copies worldwide and was the highest-selling album of 2005 in the UK, with almost 2.4 million copies, and was the best selling album of the decade in the UK. Even though it received generally positive critical reception, NME awarded the album with the Worst Album Award at the 2006 NME Awards.
Eight of the ten songs on the album were licensed for use in television shows, movies, advertising campaigns and trailers, a total of 34 times. This included "Tears and Rain", "So Long Jimmy" and "Cry", tracks that had not been released as singles. The album was the best selling album of the decade 2000-2009 in the UK.

All the Lost Souls is the second studio album by James Blunt, released on 17 September 2007. It is the follow-up to his hugely successful 2004 debut album, Back to Bedlam. The first single released from the album was "1973", which started radio play on 23 July 2007. Several songs on the album were performed at live shows during his 2006 tours, including "1973", "I Really Want You", "Annie" and "I Can't Hear The Music". His touring band, consisting of Paul Beard (keyboards and vocals), Ben Castle (guitar and vocals), Malcolm Moore (bass guitar and vocals) and Karl Brazil (drums and percussion), backed Blunt on the new album. Tom Rothrock returns as producer; Rothrock also produced Back to Bedlam. Blunt also performed the song "Same Mistake" during his performance at the Live Earth concert in London. The album sold over 3.6 million copies globally.
Victoria Newton of The Sun called the CD cover the "best in years", The cover consists of hundreds of pictures of Blunt (from childhood to recent) which forms a photomosaic of his face. Designer Nin Bose at Bose Collins joked that "James asked us not to use his face on the cover so we put it on 1,000 times."
