Tragedy as girl, 16, dies after being hit by car - police arrest 19-year-old man

A 16-year-old girl has died after she was hit by a car as a 19-year-old has been arrested.

The girl was allegedly struck by a silver Ford Fiesta in Gateshead in Tyne and Wear on Friday, June 12.

She was treated by paramedics and rushed to hospital but sadly died a short time later.

A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Northumbria Police said the crash took place on Lobley Hill Road, close to the junction with Schoolhouse Lane, at about 10.40pm.

The girl's next of kin have been informed of the crash and are being supported by officers.

A statement from Northumbria Police read: "We are appealing to anyone may have seen what happened in the moments leading up to the teenager being struck by the vehicle to contact us."

The force added that a "full investigation" has been launched to establish the circumstances of the crash.
