Drivers faced two-hour long queues on the M25 in Kent this evening due to a serious "police led incident".

The motorway was closed clockwise between the A206 (Dartford) and M25 J2 (Bean), with police and fire crews racing to the scene.

Kent Police said officers were called at 5.27pm to a report of concern for a person near Watling Street, Dartford. "Patrols are attending the area and road closures are in place near the Dartford Crossing while the incident is dealt with," the force said.

National Highways said the road re-opened at around 8:30pm and that delays in excess of 2 hours would begin to ease.

The A282 southbound has reopened between J1A (Dartford) and J1B (Darenth) following a police led incident.

There are delays in excess of 120 minutes and 7 miles of congestion on the approach, though this should begin to ease, National Highways has said.

The A282 southbound has now re-opened between J1A (Dartford) and J1B (Darenth).

Police called over concern for welfare

Police have been called to the area over concern for a person near Watling Street in Dartford.

A spokesperson for Kent Police said: "Kent Police was called at 5.27pm on Wednesday 27 May 2026 to a report of concern for a person near Watling Street, Dartford.

"Patrols are attending the area and road closures are in place near the Dartford Crossing while the incident is dealt with."

Diversion route in place

Road users are advised to follow the hollow triangle diversion symbol on road signs.

  • Exit at J1A to Littlebrook Interchange and take the second exit onto the A206 towards Greenhithe.
  • At the A206/A226 roundabout, take the third exit onto the B255 towards Bean.
  • Follow the B255 past Bluewater to the A2 junction roundabout.
  • Take the second exit onto Bean Lane and cross the A2, and follow the signs to join the A2 towards London.
  • Travel on the A2 westbound to rejoin the M25 J2 at Darenth Interchange

Delays over two hours

Drivers are now facing severe delays in excess of two hours, according to National Highways.

Congestion is continuing to build around the M25 between J29 and J30 (clockwise).

Delays of around 90 minutes

National Highways has reported delays of around 90 minutes with seven miles of congestion on the approach.
