Boy, 16, and two men arrested on suspicion of murder after man airlifted to hospital dies
Police have arrested a 16-year-old and two other men, aged 24 and 22, on suspicion of murder after a man in his 20s died following a suspected assault yesterday evening in the Byker area of Newcastle
A teenager and two men in their 20s have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man died following a suspected assault in Newcastle.
Police and an air ambulance have responded to the incident on Shields Road in the Byker area of Newcastle with a massive cordon in place and many officers seen responding on Tuesday evening with a police presence remaining this morning Chronicle Live reports.
Northumbria Police said emergency crews responding to reports of an assault found a man in his 20s with serious injuries. An Air Ambulance was pictured landing near the scene last night as the man was rushed to hospital.
Sadly the victim died a short time later, the force said in a statement today. Officers from Northumbria Police have launched a full investigation codenamed Operation Edgefield into the man’s death and three people – two men aged 24 and 22 and a boy aged 16 – have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
All three are currently in police custody meanwhile a police cordon remains in place on Shields Road as cops carry out investigative work at the scene. Witnesses or anyone with information are now being asked to come forward.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Atherton, of the Force’s Major Investigation Team, said: “This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are firmly with the family of the man who has sadly lost his life.
“We will offer them all of the support we can and would ask that their privacy is respected at this difficult time.”
DCI Atherton added: “We have launched a full investigation into the circumstances around the man’s death and arrested three people on suspicion of murder.
“We would like to reassure those in the local community that our officers remain in the area to carry out a wide range of enquiries to ascertain exactly what happened.
“I would also ask anyone with information regarding what took place yesterday evening to contact us.
“Your information could be of vital importance towards our investigation.”
