At least 27 people have been injured after two trams smashed into each other in Germany.

Dozens were treated after the crash in the city of Düsseldorf, German regional media reported.

Police are now investigating the crash, which involved two carriages with a total of about 60 passengers on board.

Fire crews attended the terrifying smash, with the local fire department saying they tended to those injured as well as 28 other people who were unharmed in the collision. Five people are understood to have been seriously injured.

The crash happened at around 11:30am on Saturday as many people were out enjoying their weekend in the bustling German city. The two trams struck each other at the intersection of Berliner Allee and Graf-Adolf-Straße (Friedrichstadt).

Local authorities said an investigation has been launched into the crash. Reports from the Rheinische Post suggest one of the trams was on the wrong track at the time of the collision.

A misaligned switch on the tram’s rail network may have been to blame for the head-on smash, the news outlet reported.

“Fortunately, none of the people we removed from the tracks sustained life-threatening injuries,” fire services said.

No technical rescue was necessary, and most of the passengers were able to free themselves from the vehicles.

A spokeswoman for Rheinbahn tram network said that trams are currently being diverted over a large area while crews work at the crash site.
