A 61-year-old Swedish man who coerced his wife into having sex with more than 120 men has been jailed for four years and five months.
The man, whose name has not been released, was convicted of multiple offences including aggravated pimping, attempted rape, assault and unlawful threats following a trial in the Angermanland region of northern Sweden.
A district court in Harnosand heard that the man controlled his wife by plying her with drugs and isolating her at their remote farm near Kramfors in Vasternorrland County. He also used surveillance cameras at the property to record sexual encounters and threatened to kill her, pour petrol over her, burn her and cut off her fingers, the court heard.
Prosecutors said earlier this year that the man was suspected of selling sex with his wife to at least 120 men, but only 29 were charged with purchasing sexual services. Twenty-eight of them were convicted of a total of 56 such offences. Two were imprisoned, while the rest were handed suspended sentences or probation.
Prosecutors said the men travelled to the farm from across the country to have sex with the victim in 2022, with her ordeal only ending when she reported her husband to police in October 2025. The man has been in custody since then.
The case has been likened to that of Dominique Pelicot in France, who drugged his then wife, Gisele, and allowed dozens of men to rape her over a nine-year period.
After a hearing that ended in late May, the court acquitted the Swedish man of eight counts of rape and another three of attempted rape. It said it was unable to establish in seven cases that the complainant’s participation was involuntary, and in another that it was unclear what sexual acts had taken place.
The court found "that the man influenced and coerced his wife into performing sexual acts on herself, broadcasting them online, receiving additional sex buyers, and attempting to persuade neighbours and customers to have sex with her", Judge Johan Ahlberg said in a statement. "In many cases, this was also done through prolonged nagging and the use of unpleasant and condescending language."
Along with the jail sentence, the man was ordered to pay 200,000 kronor (£15,900) in damages to the woman. He denied any wrongdoing and claimed he was helping to organise consensual encounters.
Swedish law criminalises the purchase and procurement of sex but does not criminalise the selling of sex by sex workers, who are considered exploited victims.
