If you use the popular Chrome browser on a MacBook, you might want to check your settings without delay. Google has just issued an important alert, confirming that it's ending support for its Chrome software on devices running older versions of Apple's macOS platform.

Although Chrome won't stop working on MacBooks and iMacs, it will block updates or security patches from being released, which means users could be more vulnerable to cyber attacks, bugs and glitches.

So who is affected, and when will the changes happen?

Google says it will no longer offer Chrome updates for Macs running macOS 12 (Monterey) or older. That means anyone still using these platforms must switch to a newer operating system - such as macOS Ventura - to get support for their browser.

Sadly, there are some Macs that aren't compatible with Ventura, which means some users may find they need to buy a new device to continue using Chrome safely. Some machines affected include iMacs that are older than the 2017 model and any MacBook Air bought before 2018.

The update will kick in from July this year.

"Chrome 150 is the last version of Chrome that will support macOS 12 (Monterey)," Google confirmed in a blog post.

"Chrome 151 (tentatively scheduled for release on July 28, 2026) is the first version of Chrome that requires macOS 13 Ventura or later. You’ll need to ensure your device is running macOS 13 or later to continue receiving future Chrome releases.

"Older versions of Chrome will continue to work, but there will be no further updates released for users on this operating system. If you are currently on macOS 12 (Monterey), we encourage you to move to a supported macOS version (macOS 13 Ventura or newer) to ensure you continue to receive the latest security updates and Chrome features."
