SerilogLibrary

Lightweight Serilog integration helpers that wire Serilog into Microsoft.Extensions.Logging and a DI bootstrapper used across the repository.

Overview

  • Provides a small configuration surface to create a Serilog logger from an IConfiguration section named LogSettings and register it as the application's ILogger via the DependencyInjectionLibrary container.
  • Key types:
    • LoggerConfigurator extension methods that configure Serilog using LogSettings and attach the logger to the DependencyInjectionConfigurationBuilder/IServiceCollection used by DependencyInjectionLibrary.
    • LogSettings / LogSettingsEx POCOs that model Serilog settings (minimum level, rolling file, flush interval and retained file count). LogSettingsEx supports a nested time structure and converts to LogSettings.
    • LoggerFilterRule small helper to represent filter rules for logging (provider, category, level and predicate).

Configuration

Add a LogSettings section to your appsettings.json (or equivalent) with the following shape:

"LogSettings": {
 "LogLevel": "Error",
 "RollingInterval": "Day",
 "RetainedFileCountLimit": 22,
 "Path": "%PROGRAMDATA%\\MyApp\\logs\\myapp.log",
 "FlushInterval": { "Hour": 0, "Minutes": 0, "Seconds": 1 }
}

Notes:

  • The Path supports environment variables which will be expanded and the directory will be created automatically.
  • FlushInterval may be provided as a nested object (LogSettingsEx) and is converted to LogSettings.

Usage

  1. Ensure your application initializes the DI container using the project's DependencyInjectionLibrary or a compatible configuration builder.
  2. Call LoggerConfigurator.AddSerilog() early in startup (this wires into ServiceProviderContainer.Instance.InjectServices so the logger is configured when the DI container is built).

Example (conceptual):

// Ensure DI bootstrapping happens (DependencyInjectionLibrary usage)
var provider = typeof(Program).ConfigureDependencyInjection(
 new DependencyInjectionItem(DependencyInjectionLibrary.Enums.LifeCycle.Singleton, typeof(IMyService), typeof(MyService))
);

// Register Serilog to be configured when services are injected
SerilogLibrary.Logger.LoggerConfigurator.AddSerilog();

// Build/resolve your service provider as usual; the library will configure and register a Microsoft logger
var logger = provider.GetService<Microsoft.Extensions.Logging.ILogger>();
logger.LogInformation("Application started");

Behavior

  • The configurator creates a Serilog Logger and writes logs to a rolling file using the configured options. It also sets a reasonable default minimum level (Error) when LogSettings is absent.
  • The created Serilog logger is attached to the Microsoft.Extensions.Logging pipeline and returned as an ILogger instance for DI.

Compatibility

  • The project targets multiple .NET framework versions in the repository (including .NET Framework 4.x and .NET Standard). Ensure you reference a compatible Serilog and Serilog.Extensions.Logging package for your target runtime.
