Canonical Finally Phasing Out Bazaar Code Hosting

Written by Michael Larabel in Ubuntu on 5 June 2025 at 05:59 AM EDT. 28 Comments
Ubuntu Linux maker Canonical announced they will be sunsetting their Bazaar distributed revision control system code hosting with Launchpad. Git wins.

Canonical developed the Bazaar distributed revision control system but Git is much more dominant and accepted by programmers. Canonical's Launchpad though has continued offering Bazaar code hosting but that will be phased out moving forward.

Bazaar hasn't seen a new release in nearly one decade while it's been on the decline given the success of Git. The Breezy fork of Bazaar has continued though for nostalgic programmers.

The web front-end to Bazaar on Launchpad, Loggerhead, is being shutdown immediately. Then on 1 September the Bazaar support is planned to be removed entirely and Launchpad users must convert any remaining repositories from Bazaar to Git before that deadline.

Those interested in the Bazaar sunsetting plans can be found via Ubuntu Discourse.
