Debian 13 "Trixie" Freeze Process Begins
The Debian release team announced that the Debian 13 "Trixie" transition and toolchain freeze began on-schedule this month.
Large or disruptive changes to Debian unstable for what will become Debian 13 is no longer permitted but should be routed to Debian experimental.
Following this toolchain and transition freeze, beginning around 15 April will be the next step as a soft freeze for Debian 13. No new packages and delayed migration will be enforced. One month later on 15 May the hard freeze for Debian 13 is expected. The full freeze is still to be determined along with ultimately when Debian 13.0 will be released.
In the release team update sent out today, it also notes the release critical bugs for Trixie is trending lower and that is a good thing. Debian 13 still needs more work on the release notes as well as for testing upgrades from Debian 12 to Debian 13.
Debian 13.0 should be released during the back-half of 2025 if all goes well and stay tuned to Phoronix to learn more about Debian 13.0 in the coming months.
