Debian 14 Eyes LoongArch CPU Support

Debian 13.0 released yesterday while already Debian developers are beginning to think about Debian 14 as the next major release due out in 2027. Debian 14 is codenamed Forky and among the changes expected is LoongArch64 "Loong64" CPU port support being improved.

With the new Debian 13 release there is RISC-V support making its official debut while for Debian 14 it could be LoongArch64's turn.

Posted to the mailing list following this weekend's Debian 13.0 debut was Bits from the Release Team: Let's Fork(y)!. Uploading to Debian unstable will soon be opened for migrations to Debian Forky. One of the first notable shifts with Debian 14 pertains to LoongArch64:

We expect to be in a position to start accepting packages built for loong64 into forky very soon (subject to architecture qualification later in the cycle).

As noted the architecture qualification will happen later in Forky's cycle but soon the ability to land Loong64 packages into Fork will be possible. Loong64 has been an unofficial Debian Port for two years while inching closer to being one of the prominent architectures supported by Debian Linux.

The LoongArch page and Loong64 port page detail some of the current work around these Chinese processors on Debian, including making use of the unofficial port binaries.
