Intel ISH Firmware Upstreamed For Linux With Dell's New Panther Lake Laptops

Ahead of Dell's new XPS 14 and XPS 16 laptops powered by Intel Core Ultra Series 3 "Panther Lake" expected to be shipping in volume beginning in March, more of the Linux support for these premium Panther Lake laptops continues to be finished up.

Last week was upstreaming the firmware files needed for audio support on the new Dell Panther Lake XPS laptops. Now another bit of firmware has been upstreamed for enabling the Intel Integrated Sensor Hub (ISH) on the Dell Panther Lake hardware. The ISH is Intel's co-processor for offloading sensor processing for better efficiency and power-savings.

There is the open-source Intel ISH driver in the mainline Linux kernel while firmware support is also required. What's now upstream in the linux-firmware.git repository is the necessary file for Dell Panther Lake systems to enjoy this offloaded sensor handling for better power efficiency.

This commit came via a Dell engineer to get that Dell ISH support ready ahead of the Panther Lake powered XPS laptops shipping in the weeks ahead.

For those wondering, initial Panther Lake Linux benchmarks on Phoronix are on track for tomorrow starting with CPU benchmarks.
